FYI: The McLaren P1—a marvel of modern automotive tech—continues to captivate enthusiasts with its astounding performance and bespoke features.
The McLaren P1: An Automotive Marvel
Introduced as the successor to the iconic McLaren F1, the McLaren P1 represented a leap forward in automotive technology. Boasting a carbon monocoque chassis that weighed just 200 pounds, and exterior and interior components constructed with carbon fiber panels, the P1 was designed to push boundaries in both performance and elegance.
Unmatched Performance
At its heart, the McLaren P1 featured a mid-mounted 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that delivered an astonishing 717 horsepower at 7,300 rpm and 531 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Complementing this powerhouse was an electric motor generating an additional 176 horsepower, designed not for fuel economy but to provide uninterrupted performance. This combination allowed the P1 to offer a total output of 893 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque.
Exceptional aerodynamics, utilizing adjustable front and rear spoilers to generate up to 1,300 pounds of downforce, ensured that every ounce of power was effectively transferred to the road. The results were nothing short of spectacular: McLaren reported a top speed of 217 mph and a 0–60 mph acceleration time of just 2.7 seconds.
An Exclusive Production Run
Production of the McLaren P1 was limited to only 375 units, making it a coveted possession among car enthusiasts worldwide. Each P1 owner had the opportunity to customize their vehicle extensively, thanks to the expertise of McLaren’s engineers and artisans. However, some P1s stood out more than others, distinguished by the unique preferences of their owners.
Spotlight: Chassis 002
One such standout is the P1 with chassis number 002, the earliest P1 made available for public purchase. Initially sold in May 2014 through McLaren Greenwich in Connecticut, this P1 featured over $109,000 worth of McLaren Special Operations (MSO) equipment, adding to its already impressive $1,150,000 base price. Custom elements included green-tinted exposed carbon fiber on various interior components and contrasting green stitching on the upholstery and steering wheel.
A Unique Transformation
In an extraordinary move, the original owner decided to return chassis 002 to McLaren after learning about the availability of a special run of P1s with fully exposed carbon fiber coachwork. The car underwent a significant transformation, featuring a newly fitted, fully exposed green-tinted carbon fiber body. This made it one of the few P1s with such a feature and the only known factory-upgraded model. The entire MSO team, impressed by their handiwork, signed the car’s engine bay, making it even more unique.
Meticulous Maintenance and Upkeep
After the transformation, chassis 002 was driven fewer than 600 miles before its original owner parted with it in 2017. It was then imported to Canada and maintained meticulously by McLaren retailers. Maintenance included a new charger in October 2021 ($33,416), a comprehensive vehicle health inspection in August 2022 ($22,096), and major service, including a new HDA with clutch assembly in August 2023 ($135,320). Most recently, McLaren Toronto confirmed in April 2024 that the battery was in good health. With fewer than 5,890 miles on its odometer, service invoices are available for review, showcasing the meticulous care it has received.
A Must-Have for Collectors
As the first McLaren P1 offered to the public, chassis 002 inherently holds significant collectible value. Its bespoke features and limited edition status make it an industry icon destined for appreciation. Any supercar collector would consider this an essential addition to their collection.
