FYI: The Second-Generation BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Revitalizes its Legacy with Enhanced Design and Power
The unveiling of BMW’s second-generation 2 Series Gran Coupe marks a significant shift in the brand’s approach to its entry-level luxury lineup. Historically, the first iteration of BMW’s front-wheel-drive Gran Coupe faced harsh criticism for its styling and driving dynamics, especially upon its debut back in 2020. Now, as we move into a post-2020 world, BMW is determined to redefine this model with refreshed design cues and improved performance.
A Fresh Start for BMW’s Controversial Model
The first-generation BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe was met with mixed reviews, primarily due to its unconventional styling and underwhelming driving dynamics. However, the new model aims to change people’s perceptions. Showcased at this year’s BMW Test Fest, the updated version promises to be a more cohesive vehicle that aligns better with BMW’s premium standards.
First Impressions of the New Gran Coupe
On a brief test drive at the renowned BMW Test Track in South Carolina, the 2025 BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe exhibited notable improvements. The car proved its mettle with stable, solid handling and responsive behavior during high-speed maneuvers. It was lively yet controlled, showcasing a desire to oversteer playfully, creating thrilling driving moments. The interior now feels more luxurious and spacious, complementing the overall driving experience.
Design Overhaul: Aesthetic Enhancements
A significant gripe with the inaugural model was its rugged aesthetics. The second generation, while still not a showstopper, boasts notable enhancements. The rear design is sleeker, the front-end less pronounced, and the overall silhouette more in harmony with BMW’s design ethos. Having all new Gran Coupes come standard with the M Sport exterior design package helps maintain a sporty, upscale appearance.
Performance Unveiled: Power Meets Practicality
BMW has injected more power into this generation. The base 228i model now features a turbocharged 2.0-liter Miller Cycle inline-four engine, generating 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque— a definitive upgrade. The M235i variant, equipped with a 2-liter turbocharged engine, delivers 312 horsepower, although, with slightly less torque than its predecessor. Both engines come with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, enabling spirited performance with a 0-60 mph sprint in 5.8 seconds for the 228i and 4.7 seconds for the M235i.
Tech-Savvy and Safety-Focused
The 2 Series Gran Coupe isn’t just about power; it’s also laden with cutting-edge technology. Both models feature BMW’s latest curved driver’s display and an upgraded iDrive system. A host of modern amenities, from a 12-speaker Harmon/Kardon stereo to adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance, enhances the vehicle’s appeal.
Pricing and Availability
Most of the new 2 Series Gran Coupes are slated for release in March, with the base 228i model arriving later in the year. Starting at $40,775, the 228i offers a compelling option for luxury-seeking buyers. Upgrading to the xDrive version costs an additional $2,000, while the top-tier M235i xDrive is priced at $50,675.
Verdict: A Shift in the Right Direction
While the second-generation BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe may not set the hearts of driving purists ablaze, it certainly addresses many of the criticisms leveled against its predecessor. It’s a well-rounded, entry-level luxury model that exudes a rejuvenated sporty edge and corrective design. However, for those searching for a more traditional BMW experience, a used 3 Series or a rear-wheel-drive 2 Series Coupe may still be the preferred choice.
