FYI: The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox faces stiff competition amid GM’s ongoing electrification push.
2025 Chevrolet Equinox: An Awkward Timing Amidst Electrification
MINNEAPOLIS – With General Motors advancing its electrification strategy, the launch of the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox arrives at a peculiar junction. Unlike its electrified counterpart—the Equinox EV—the standard 2025 Equinox remains solely reliant on internal combustion, with no hybrid variant in sight. This brings into question Chevy’s strategy in an evolving market where traditional internal combustion compact SUVs are diminishing.
Equinox: A Sales Powerhouse in Jeopardy?
As Chevrolet’s second best-selling model, the Equinox plays a vital role in the brand’s lineup. The vehicle’s significance is underscored by how it trails only the Silverado in sales numbers—an unusual scenario for any automaker. Maintaining its competitive edge in this segment is crucial for Chevy.
2025 Model: Changes and Challenges
The 2025 Equinox boasts an appealing design, both inside and out. However, when compared to its competitors and even to the 2024 model, it has several shortcomings. The new model continues with the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 175 horsepower—the lowest in its class. The transmission options have been revised with a CVT for front-wheel-drive models and an eight-speed automatic for all-wheel-drive models.
Detailed Performance Specs
- Torque Variations: AWD models retain 203 pound-feet of torque, while FWD models drop to 184 pound-feet.
-
Fuel Economy: Unfortunately, the new transmissions have not led to better fuel efficiency. Both FWD and AWD models show lower highway fuel economy compared to their 2024 counterparts. A direct comparison of fuel economy is shown in the table below from the EPA website:
The New Equinox Activ
The 2025 release introduces the Equinox Activ, sporting a rugged appearance with unique design elements and "Activ" badging. Despite its robust look, it remains an appearance package with General Grabber all-terrain tires, which are notably cheaper to maintain than conventional options. The new wider body adds 2.5 inches to its stance but also adds weight without increasing interior or cargo space.
Interior Updates and Driving Impressions
Inside, the 2025 Equinox features an improved design with a "Maple Sugar" tan and black combination. However, the absence of a leather option limits luxury desirability. The gear shifter has been moved to a steering column-mounted stem, freeing the center console space—although it’s now occupied by a large drive-mode dial.
A dual-screen setup enhances the dashboard, running on GM’s latest Android-based infotainment system integrated with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Real-World Testing
We tested three trims: FWD LT, AWD RS, and AWD Activ. The LT and Activ’s 17-inch wheels ensured a smooth ride on urban streets, while RS’s recommendation leans towards 19-inch wheels for better suspension match. Despite the reduced torque, the 1.5-liter engine handled adequately, even with the less exciting CVT.
Infotainment and Electrical Hiccups
There were some issues with the pre-installed navigation system and infotainment crashes, requiring a complete restart of the vehicle. Such software reliability concerns may impact consumer perception negatively.
Competitive Landscape and Future Prospects
Chevy isn’t alone in offering a single-engine choice for its compact SUVs, but competitors like Mazda and Subaru are launching hybrid versions soon. Chevy’s timeline for introducing a plug-in hybrid delays until 2027, which raises concerns considering its historic advances like the Volt.
GM’s vision clearly aligns more with electrification, with significant emphasis and investment towards EV platforms. The Equinox EV, equipped with features like Super Cruise, is much pricier, indicating a focus shift.
Conclusion
The 2025 Chevrolet Equinox has improved its aesthetics and infotainment features, but the lack of hybrid options and outdated powertrains hold it back. As a solid transport option, it remains smooth and comfortable for everyday commutes but lacks excitement and competitiveness. Until GM accelerates its hybrid or electrification plans, the Equinox might struggle to stand out in a changing automotive landscape.
