2025 Ford Mustang Review: Sleeker Design, Yet Distinctive Performance

FYI: The 2025 Ford Mustang offers a distinct blend of big power, modern technology, and classic charm, despite a few drawbacks like a rigid ride in some versions and the absence of a high-performance package for its EcoBoost engine.

Pros and Cons of the 2025 Ford Mustang

Pros:

  • High output from all engine options
  • Wide variety of flavors to suit different tastes
  • Convertible model available
  • Fun features like drift brakes and customizable displays
  • Spacious trunk for a coupe

Cons:

  • 10-speed automatic transmission isn’t very performance-oriented
  • Limited customizable drive mode settings
  • Performance package can reduce ride quality
  • Convertible suffers from cowl shake

The Distinctive Appeal of the 2025 Ford Mustang

The evolution of the Ford Mustang into its 2025 version introduces a vehicle that stands out with a mix of nostalgia and cutting-edge tech. Now equipped with gimmicks like the ability to rev the engine from your key fob or swap the digital gauge themes to mimic a 1987 Mustang, it brings a playful element to the modern muscle car. With options to choose from over 30 different interior display color combinations, and the exciting drift brake feature, Ford ensures a fun experience behind the wheel. Although, it’s a bit of a letdown that the drift brake is no longer available with the base EcoBoost four-cylinder engine due to the discontinuation of the High Performance package.

Engines and Performance

For 2025, the Mustang caters to the power-hungry with two potent engines. The GT’s 5.0-liter Coyote V8 churns out 480 horsepower, while the Dark Horse variant pushes that number to 500 horsepower. Both engines offer a choice between a 10-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual transmission. The manual even includes features like automatic rev-matching and hill start assist, making it not only enjoyable but functional for daily driving.

The recent chassis upgrade of the Mustang makes for a sharper driving experience, with or without the GT Performance Pack. The performance package enhances handling but at the cost of ride comfort, particularly on daily commutes. It’s especially noticeable in the convertible model, where ride firmness and cowl shake become more pronounced.

Interior and Technology

The 2025 Mustang’s interior represents a harmonious blend of retro aesthetics and modern functionality. It features two large screens, creating a cockpit-like atmosphere for the driver. The customizable gauge cluster can be adjusted in about 30 different color combinations, suiting even the pickiest of drivers. The infotainment system is powered by Ford’s Sync 4, boasting a 13.2-inch touchscreen with constant access to climate controls and key menu icons, even when using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Sadly, the vehicle drops some noteworthy features: wireless charging is gone, and color choices are narrowed, with favorites like Atlas Blue and Rapid Red no longer available. Dual-zone climate control, however, is now standard across all trims.

Size and Practicality

In terms of size, Mustang enthusiasts will be pleased to find that the 2025 model continues to offer generous front-seat adjustments and adequate headroom. However, opting for the Recaro seats might not be wise for those at either extreme of the height spectrum due to their limited adjustability. The back seat remains suitable mostly for small bags or pets, though it can fit a child seat in a pinch.

Trunk space is another strong point, with the hardtop coupe offering 13.3 cubic feet of storage, while the convertible’s 10.3 cubic feet of trunk space is still quite respectable.

Fuel Economy and Specifications

The 2025 Mustang EcoBoost houses a 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, managing a fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The GT’s V8 offers 480 horsepower, while the Dark Horse variant bumps it up to 500 horsepower, with fuel economies sitting around 14-18 mpg depending on the configuration.

Driving Experience

The 2025 Mustang offers a versatile driving experience across its variants:

  • EcoBoost Model: While it lacks the V8’s roar, its power is formidable for its class. Disappointedly, the absence of the High Performance Pack limits its handling abilities.
  • GT and Convertible Models: Opting for the GT’s manual transmission is highly recommended for its engaging experience, although the automatic option doesn’t quite cut it for performance enthusiasts.
  • Dark Horse Variant: Although it boasts superior specs and performance enhancements, it may not offer significant advantages over a fully-loaded GT for the daily driver.

Cost and Safety Features

Pricing for the 2025 Mustang positions it competitively within the muscle car market. The base EcoBoost Fastback starts at $33,515, while the high-end Dark Horse Premium goes up to $69,870. Despite some price hikes for premium options like Brembo brakes, the Mustang remains a worthwhile investment for its power and features.

Safety is duly prioritized, with the NHTSA awarding the Mustang Coupe a perfect five-star rating. Standard safety features include Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite, with advanced options available in higher trims.

Conclusion

The 2025 Ford Mustang continues to be a beloved icon, combining retro appeal with modern innovations and robust performance. Despite some feature omissions and ride quality trade-offs, it remains a top pick in the muscle car segment, especially given the dwindling rivalry. The Mustang’s versatility ensures it can cater to a wide array of drivers, maintaining its legacy as the ultimate American pony car.
