FYI: The 2025 Volkswagen Jetta demonstrates that sedans are still viable contenders in the automotive market, with notable updates in style, technology, and performance.
2025 Volkswagen Jetta: A Fresh Take on a Timeless Classic
DEXTER, Mich. — While many automakers are phasing out sedans, Volkswagen proves that the classic four-door model still has a place in today’s market with the 2025 Volkswagen Jetta. Ranking as Volkswagen’s third-best-selling vehicle in the U.S. behind the Tiguan and Atlas, the Jetta continues to attract a loyal customer base. For 2025, several tweaks and updates have been made to enhance its appeal. We took the standard model and the sporty GLI for a spin to experience the latest offerings.
Subtle Yet Significant Exterior Enhancements
The 2025 Jetta features subtle changes to its front and rear fascias. The upper and lower grilles have been refreshed, and new LED headlights with an optional light bar across the front give it a modern touch. At the back, a standard light bar now graces the trunk lid. The SE trim boasts new 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, while the SEL and GLI come fitted with 18-inch wheels. Both the SE and GLI trims also offer a black wheel package, and two new color options—Monterey Blue Pearl and Monument Gray—have been added to the lineup.
Tech-Forward Interior Updates
Inside, the Jetta receives a revamped dashboard featuring a new design. Three horizontal bars on either side of the standard 8-inch infotainment touchscreen and gauge cluster cleverly camouflage the air vents. The “Climatronic” touch controls for the HVAC system simplify temperature adjustments with easily tappable red and blue ends. While traditional knobs have been replaced, these touch controls contribute to a more premium cabin feel. Despite the dated look of the 8-inch infotainment display, wireless Apple CarPlay improves functionality. Thankfully, Volkswagen has retained the physical volume and tuning knobs, alongside accessible infotainment buttons.
Consistent Powertrain Choices with Manual Options
For 2025, the Jetta retains its existing engines. The standard model is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four engine, producing 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Manual transmissions are available in about 5 percent of trims other than the GLI. The sporty GLI uses a more robust 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and comes with a choice of a seven-speed DSG or a six-speed manual transmission.
Driving Impressions: SEL and GLI Models
Our first drive in the SEL trim took us around southeast Michigan’s scenic routes. The standard Jetta’s engine provides ample power at low speeds, though it tapers off at higher speeds. The steering is light and responsive, making tight, twisty roads enjoyable. The chassis is well-controlled, minimizing body roll even with the torsion beam rear suspension. The Jetta excels in providing a smooth, refined ride, be it on undulating or well-designed pavements.
Switching to the GLI with the manual transmission, we were impressed by its performance. The clutch is light, and although the shifter lacks tactile feedback, it guides the stick effortlessly. Once accustomed to its airy feel, gear changes become confidence-inspiring and seamless. The GLI’s extra power also adds a thrilling element, inducing wheelspin and tire noise through first and second gears. Whether whipping through gear changes or cruising smoothly, the manual transmission is a standout feature.
Pricing and Availability
For those eyeing the 2025 Jetta GLI, it comes in a solitary trim priced at $33,940, including a $1,225 delivery charge. The price remains the same whether you choose the six-speed manual or the seven-speed DSG. If the GLI’s performance doesn’t pique your interest, the standard Jetta starts at $23,220 for the base S trim and tops out at $30,225 for the SEL. Available at dealerships by the end of the third quarter, the 2025 Jetta offers both affordable refinement and exhilarating performance to suit diverse tastes.
