FYI: Mercedes-Benz announces the launch of electric C-Class and GLC-Class models set for 2026, with new EV platform plans to boost sales amidst changing market dynamics.
Mercedes-Benz Unveils 2026 Electric C-Class and GLC-Class Models
Mercedes-Benz has officially confirmed the addition of electric versions to its C-Class and GLC-Class lineups, with sales anticipated to commence in 2026. This announcement was made by CEO Ola Källenius during the company’s recent earnings call, providing insight into Mercedes’ strategic plans moving forward.
Sleek New EV Designs Set to Innovate
Prototypes of the electric C-Class sedan and GLC-Class crossover have been spotted undergoing tests, revealing significant design enhancements. Both models are expected to feature distinct, aerodynamic styling, aligning with the latest trends in electric vehicle design. Performance enthusiasts can also look forward to AMG-tuned versions of these new electric models.
Leveraging the MB.EA Dedicated EV Platform
During the earnings call, Källenius highlighted that these upcoming EVs would utilize the MB.EA dedicated electric vehicle platform, as reported by Automotive News (subscription required). Mercedes-Benz is betting on these new introductions to revitalize its EV sales, which saw a 25% decline year-on-year, dropping from 61,211 units to 45,843.
The MB.EA platform was first introduced to the public in 2021. A larger variant, MB.EA Large, was initially planned to support successors to the EQE and EQS models. However, Mercedes eventually decided to enhance the existing EVA2 platform for future iterations of these models, with a more traditional sedan-like EQS expected to debut around 2028.

Expanding EV Platform Portfolio
Mercedes has ambitious plans extending beyond the MB.EA platform. The company is also developing the MMA platform for compact EVs and hybrids, the AMG.EA platform for high-performance electric vehicles from AMG, and the Van.EA platform designed for electric light commercial vehicles. The MMA platform is scheduled to launch next year, debuting in a new CLA-Class EV model, while the AMG.EA platform is expected to make its debut in a successor to the GT 4-Door Coupe.
Market Dynamics and Future Prospects
Mercedes-Benz’s endeavor to exclusively sell electric vehicles by 2030 has been reassessed due to the slower-than-expected EV adoption rates. While the company initially aimed for a complete transition to electric, it has now announced the continuation of gas-powered models into the next decade. This pivot aligns with moves from other luxury automakers such as Cadillac, which also plans to offer gas-powered vehicles beyond its original 2030 deadline.
Porsche has similarly adjusted its targets, indicating that it does not expect 80% of its sales to come from EVs by 2030. The automaker confirmed that despite launching an electric Cayenne soon, it will continue to offer gas and plug-in hybrid versions of the popular SUV well into the future.
Conclusion
Mercedes-Benz is making bold strides toward expanding its electric offerings with the impending release of the electric C-Class and GLC-Class in 2026. With the integration of advanced EV platforms, the company aims to invigorate its electric vehicle market presence while navigating the evolving landscape of consumer preferences and market demand.
