The Revival of Ford Legends: Boreham Motorworks to Bring Back Iconic Cars
Classic cars always seem to make a great comeback, and they’re beloved by fans and enthusiasts worldwide. While some car manufacturers may be hesitant to revive legendary models, custom car builders are often ready to step in and fill the gap. One such company is Boreham Motorworks, a segment of the DRVN Automotive Group, poised to touch the hearts of British Ford aficionados.
A New Era for Ford Icons: RS200 and MK1 Escort
Boreham Motorworks has teamed up with Ford Motor Company to reintroduce some of Ford’s most iconic cars. This partnership will see the legendary Ford RS200 and the classic Ford MK1 Escort return to production. These iconic American vehicles, remastered and updated, will be reintroduced to a new generation of car enthusiasts.
Ford RS200 Production Resumes
The Ford RS200, known for its incredible performance, could race from 0 to 60 mph in just over three seconds. Featuring advanced suspension and a four-wheel-drive system, it was adept at tackling the tough terrains of rally stages. The RS200 debuted in the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 1986 but had a brief rally career cut short by a series of tragic accidents, including one involving an RS200. Consequently, the Group B category was closed by the FIA, and only 200 RS200s were produced, making them rare and highly valuable collectors’ items.
Boreham Motorworks has since developed a new RS200 production model and signed a brand licensing agreement with Ford. The UK-based car designer will produce the RS200 along with other legendary Ford vehicles for road, race, and rally applications. The revival of the RS200 is particularly timely, coming just in time for its 40th anniversary.
Possible Powertrains for the New Ford RS200
The original RS200, launched in 1984, featured a mid-engine layout, advanced four-wheel-drive system, and a lightweight composite body. As a legendary rally car, the new model is expected to retain some of its motorsport legacy, ensuring power and agility.
Original Ford RS200 Specifications:
- Engine: 1.8-liter BDT-E turbocharged inline 4-cylinder
- Power: 250-450 HP (depending on specifications)
- Torque: Rally spec: 361 LB-FT
- Transmission: 5-speed manual
- Drivetrain: 4WD
- 0-60 mph: 3.1 seconds (Rally spec)
"From our first meeting with Boreham Motorworks and the DRVN team, it was clear they had an inspiring vision for bringing some of our most iconic historic nameplates to life in the modern era, and we’re excited to watch this relationship develop." — Will Ford, General Manager, Ford Performance Motorsports.
The Classic Ford MK1 Escort
Following the RS200, Boreham Motorworks will revive the Group 5 Ford MK1 Escort. Introduced in the late 1960s, the MK1 Escort quickly became a motorsport icon, renowned for its lightweight design and excellent handling. The sequel will be built following the original blueprints, ensuring an ‘authentic driving experience.’
