FYI: BMW surpasses Tesla in European EV sales for just one month
In a surprising turn of events, BMW managed to outpace Tesla in electric vehicle (EV) sales within Europe for the first time ever, albeit for a single month according to the latest data. For several years, Tesla has dominated the European EV market. However, BMW, a domestic competitor, managed to exceed Tesla’s sales figures by approximately 300 units in its home region.
### Record-Breaking Month for BMW
Market research firm JATO Dynamics reported BMW’s triumphant sales figures, with the company selling a total of 14,869 EVs in the European market last month. This marks the first instance of BMW surpassing Tesla in monthly sales.
### The Bigger Picture
While BMW’s achievement is notable, it is essential to consider Tesla’s overarching lead in cumulative sales. According to data from EU EVs, a website dedicated to tracking EV sales statistics across the European Union, Tesla maintains a year-to-date advantage exceeding 6,000 units, commanding a three percent market share.
Tesla’s figures for the year stand at 26,980 units sold, securing 13.2 percent of the market. In comparison, BMW has sold 20,895 units, making up 10.2 percent of the market.
### Top Performers
Even in light of BMW’s recent success, Tesla’s Model Y remains the best-selling EV in Europe, with 17,057 units sold in July alone. The Model 3 followed closely with 9,732 sales. BMW’s i4 model secured the fourth spot, trailing the Audi Q4 e-Tron.

### Year-Over-Year Comparisons
BMW’s strong performance for the month was underscored by a 35 percent increase in sales compared to the same period last year, as noted by JATO Dynamics. On the flip side, Tesla experienced a 16 percent decline in sales compared to July 2023, which contributed to BMW’s brief overtake.
### Conclusion
BMW’s one-month lead over Tesla illustrates the competitive and dynamic nature of the electric vehicle market in Europe. While Tesla retains its dominant position, BMW’s breakthrough signals its potential to challenge and perhaps disrupt the established order in the EV sector.
