The Final Journey of Bugatti’s Iconic W16 Engine: The Unveiling of the W16 Mistral
The W16 Mistral represents a monumental step in Bugatti’s storied history, marking the first open-top model from Molsheim since 2015 and serving as the fitting swansong for the brand’s unmatched W16 engine. Given the project’s significance and Bugatti’s unwavering commitment to excellence, the testing program for the Mistral has been exceptionally comprehensive.
Crafting Perfection: The Heart of the Mistral
At the core of the Mistral is the ultimate rendition of the iconic W16 engine, coupled with newly refined aerodynamics and a completely re-engineered monocoque. Bugatti engineers have meticulously combined these elements to promise unparalleled performance, acoustic excellence, and supreme luxury, all while achieving a top speed exceeding 420 km/h – a feat that requires careful balancing of numerous factors.
Rigorous Testing: Ensuring Excellence
Bugatti’s dedication to performance, safety, and durability is exemplified in the exhaustive testing program set for the Mistral. Every aspect of its design has been thoroughly evaluated to create Bugatti’s ultimate roadster. Entering the second half of 2024, the W16 Mistral is now in the final stages of its evaluation phase.
“We are in the final phase of testing – we are approaching the conclusion. From initial validations to intensive endurance assessments, every step of the Mistral’s development has been meticulously planned and executed,” said Emilio Scervo, Bugatti Rimac’s CTO. “The Mistral epitomizes our unwavering commitment to defining new standards in roadster design.”
Prioritizing Safety and Performance
An essential phase in the Mistral’s testing has been the stringent crash tests, crucial for the new monocoque design’s integration and market homologation, including for North America and Europe. These tests ensure compliance with international safety standards.
Following successful aerodynamic evaluations and thorough dynamometer testing of the W16 engine and its transmission, Bugatti is now conducting rigorous road tests to assess the Mistral’s performance under various driving conditions. These evaluations focus on safety, emissions, endurance, and drivability.
Journey of a Prodigy: Road Tests
The road tests for the Bugatti Mistral are comprehensive. Prototype 2 alone has already clocked an impressive 32,000 km, demonstrating its adaptability and durability across different terrains, altitudes, and traffic conditions. With plans to add another 5,000 km on the track, Bugatti aims to accumulate a total of 40,000 km on this prototype – a milestone that few modern Bugatti customer cars reach.
Pushing Boundaries: Top Speed Verification
One of the significant challenges ahead is verifying the Mistral’s top speed. Finding a suitable track to safely reach speeds over 420 km/h is a logistical challenge that Bugatti is confident in overcoming.
“We plan to conduct the final high-speed test on one of the few tracks worldwide that allows us to test safely. Once we have access to that track, achieving the top speed will be straightforward,” added Emilio Scervo.
Conclusion: A Benchmark in Luxury and Performance
Throughout its development, Bugatti has remained dedicated to delivering a car that not only meets Bugatti’s legendary performance standards but also sets new benchmarks for safety and reliability in a hypersports roadster. The W16 Mistral is poised to offer an unparalleled luxury driving experience. With testing nearing completion, production of Bugatti’s most aerodynamic and evocative roadster is anticipated to begin at the Molsheim Atelier later this year.

Keep dreaming, girl! We won’t ever get close to such car.
Yeah right! Like they gonna let us common folks drive it haha
Why would anyone need a car that goes 420 km/h? This is just ridiclus. Total waste of money if u ask me.
Bugatti always setting new standards. Amazing to see the dedication to perfomance and safety. Proper testing and all! Respect.
Oh great, another car for rich people to brag about. Bet they gonna use it to go buy groceries at 420 km/h, lol.
Why they can’t just make a normal car that runs on water or something? All these fancy engines but we still stuck with petrol. Ridiculous!
