FYI: Cadillac is recalling over 21,000 Lyriq electric crossovers due to a potential brake issue in certain 2023 and 2024 all-wheel-drive models.
Cadillac Recalls Nearly 21,500 Lyriq EVs for Brake Software Fix
Certain all-wheel-drive Cadillac Lyriq EVs are experiencing a software issue in their electronic brake control module that could potentially make their brakes inoperable. Rear-wheel-drive models remain unaffected by this recall, and the issue can be fixed remotely via an over-the-air software update.
Scope of the Recall
Cadillac has initiated a recall for 21,469 Lyriq electric crossovers in the United States, specifically targeting the 2023 and 2024 all-wheel-drive models. General Motors (GM), Cadillac’s parent company, identified a rare software issue in the electronic brake control module. This malfunction could arise during certain braking events on dry surfaces at speeds below 25 miles per hour, potentially causing the anti-lock braking system (ABS) to become overly sensitive.
Conditions Leading to the Issue
In these specific conditions, ABS may incorrectly activate, causing a sequence of wheel movements that leads the system to continuously release braking pressure. Consequently, this could drastically reduce stopping performance or even render the brakes inoperative.
Incident Reports and Investigation
The issue came to light earlier this year following two minor accidents attributed to an alleged loss of braking power. Due to the serious nature of these incidents, GM conducted an extensive engineering analysis and opened a product investigation on May 31. The investigation revealed that this braking issue, albeit rare, was indeed linked to software in the electronic brake control module.
Fix Implementation
The solution to this problem comes in the form of a software update, which will be deployed over-the-air to the affected vehicles. Owners can also choose to perform the update by visiting their local Cadillac dealer. Thankfully, GM has reported no injuries or fatalities related to this issue and has recorded only three field reports concerning this condition.
Previous Recalls
Since its debut in 2022, the Cadillac Lyriq has been subject to several recalls, including:
- A recall for a seatbelt bracket that may have been improperly welded.
- Another recall for insufficient wire insulation in the electric motor, which could result in a loss of drive power.
Conclusion
Cadillac’s proactive approach in recalling these vehicles and offering an over-the-air software fix demonstrates their commitment to safety and customer satisfaction. Owners of affected models should ensure they complete the update to maintain optimal vehicle performance and safety.
