FYI: Chevrolet intends to train up to 7,000 salespeople on electric vehicle essentials to boost its EV market presence.
After achieving record electric vehicle (EV) sales in the second quarter of this year, General Motors (GM) shows no signs of slowing down. Chevrolet is taking a significant step forward with a nationwide dealership training program aimed at enhancing dealer knowledge about EVs to streamline the sales process.
Comprehensive Training for Better EV Knowledge
Chevrolet’s new training initiative is set to educate up to 7,000 dealership employees by the end of this fall. Currently, the program is active in five states, with plans for expansion. The training covers vital EV basics, including regenerative braking, cold-weather range, and the reality that most drivers do not need as much range as they might think.
The Timely Arrival of EV-focused Training
This training initiative couldn’t come at a better time. With the recent market introduction of models like the Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV, Chevrolet buyers are increasingly open to electric options. The program also lays the groundwork for upcoming models like the next-generation Chevy Bolt, which is anticipated to further boost sales.
Insight from Chevy’s Leadership
Michael MacPhee, Chevrolet’s director of sales operations, emphasizes the unprecedented focus on EVs in this initiative. "We’ve had live drive events and multi-city tours before, but this is the first time we’ve been so EV-focused," MacPhee said in an interview with Automotive News.
Scott Bell, VP of Global Chevrolet, also announced future plans: "We are bringing additional variants, including a base Equinox EV trim offering a 319-mile range for $34,995 with shipping, a mainstream Silverado EV retail trim, and a front-wheel-drive Blazer EV priced in the mid-$40,000s."
How the Training Program Works
The training program invites sales consultants from EV-certified dealerships—those that have invested in necessary EV infrastructure such as chargers and specialized tools. Training sessions have already been conducted in Monticello, N.Y.; Fort Worth, Texas; and Atlanta. Upcoming sessions are scheduled for Las Vegas and Indianapolis, with more sessions anticipated next year.
Training Content and Effectiveness
The training covers key areas such as:
- Energy Recovery Technology: How GM’s EVs improve range, especially in cold weather.
- Long-term Cost: Comparing the cost of EV ownership to internal combustion engine vehicles.
- Range Realities: Demonstrating how a 300-400 mile range is sufficient for drivers who average 25 miles a day.
According to Automotive News, the training significantly boosts confidence among sales consultants. Before the training, only 3 out of 10 participants felt fully prepared to sell Chevy EVs; post-training, this number rose to 8 out of 10, showcasing the program’s effectiveness.
Conclusion
Chevrolet’s initiative to train up to 7,000 dealership employees on EVs is a strategic move to bolster its presence in the electric vehicle market. As more models like the Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV gain traction, and future launches like the next-gen Bolt come into play, these well-informed sales consultants are expected to make a significant impact on EV sales.
