Chevrolet Silverado EV: The New Towing Range Champion
When it comes to electric trucks designed for towing, the Chevrolet Silverado EV has set a new benchmark despite its ostensibly lower tow rating compared to the Rivian R1T and Tesla Cybertruck. While the Silverado EV’s maximum tow capacity is rated at 10,000 lbs, it surpasses its competitors in real-world towing range.
Real-World Towing Tests
In a recent video by JerryRigEverything, Zack tested the towing capabilities of various electric trucks by hitching them to an 11,000-lb trailer. The lineup included the Rivian R1T Launch Edition, Tesla Cybertruck, and Ford F-150 Lightning. Previously, the Ford F-150 Lightning held the title, covering 130 miles on a single charge, followed by the Rivian at 100 miles, and the Cybertruck at 90 miles. Notably, the Rivian and Cybertruck conducted their tests in colder temperatures, which can significantly affect electric vehicle (EV) range.
However, in optimal conditions, the Silverado EV outperformed them all. Zack managed to cover an impressive 163 miles at an average speed of 75 mph while towing the massive trailer, with an additional 14 miles of range indicated when reaching a charger. Totalling 177 miles, the Silverado EV demonstrated a remarkable 36% increase in range over the F-150 Lightning, 77% over the Rivian, and nearly double the distance of the Cybertruck.
Understanding the Towing Range Challenge
Towing demands substantial energy, and while electric motors are inherently efficient, batteries lack the energy density of gasoline. Consequently, towing long distances with an EV necessitates large battery capacities. The Silverado EV’s 200 kWh usable battery capacity is significantly larger than the 120-135 kWh found in its competitors, providing it with a distinct advantage for long-haul towing.
Why the Silverado EV Excels
The larger battery isn’t the Silverado EV’s only selling point. Zack noted that the Silverado was quieter under load compared to its counterparts, contributing to a more comfortable towing experience. Despite being the slowest truck to accelerate to 60 mph with a trailer, the Silverado’s significantly lower motor whine made a considerable difference.
Cost of Towing Excellence
While the Silverado EV’s towing capabilities are impressive, they come at a price. The 4WT trim starts at approximately $80,000 and features a no-frills interior and minimal tech gadgets. For those needing more comfort and features, the RST trim starts at $96,395. These high prices align more closely with the status-symbol Tesla Cybertruck rather than the work-oriented Ford F-150 Lightning Pro.
Final Verdict
For most cost-effective electric work trucks, the Ford F-150 Lightning continues to hold its ground. However, when it comes to long-distance towing, the Silverado EV is the clear leader. Its combination of range, power, and quieter operation sets it apart in the growing EV truck market.

Chevy probably has a bigger battery than the cybertruck
Wow, who needs a tow truck when you got this futuristic beast? I mean, 177 miles? Maybe I can finally tow my dreams away.
Yeah, becuz everyone totally drives 11,000-lb trailers everyday. Exactly what I needed for my groceries.
Clearly the Silverado is the hero we didn’t ask for. Next up: towing the moon.
Oh great, now I can spend my life savings on a truck that’s slightly quieter. What a deal!
Yup, worth every penny for that sweet, sweet silence while I tow my yacht.
A 36% increase in range? Impressive! I’ll definitely consider this when I need to tow my house across the country.
Finally! A truck that can tow 11,000 lbs 177 miles! Just what everyone’s been waiting for…said no one ever.
Exactly, because long distance towing is the first thing that comes to mind when buying an electric vehicle.
Totally the feature that determines my $96k purchase. How did we live without it?
Oh joy, I can now take my 11,000-lb trailer for a 177 miles drive. Life changing discovery!
Wait, so for only $80,000 I can tow almost 180 miles? Shut up and take my money!
Right? It’s like they know we all have a spare $80k lying around just waiting to be spent.
Because nothing screams practicality like an electric truck that costs more than my mortgage.
177 miles, huh? Maybe now I can finally make that trip to nowhere without needing a recharge. #GameChanger
Yes, because what we really needed was an electric truck to make towing a little bit longer before running out of juice.
Absolutely, can’t wait to tow all my nonsensical dreams with it!
Wow! I found this so informative and eye-opening. Never thought Chevy Silverado EV could outdo Tesla Cybertruck in towing! Guess I’ll have to reconsider my options
Yea, right? I was leaning towards the Rivian, but now I might just change my mind.
The more I read about EVs, the more surprising facts I discover. Thanks for sharing!
So, we should pay 80k+ for a no-frills Silverado just for towing? Great deal… NOT!
The thing about these tests is they don’t always reflect real-world use. Colder temps affect range, sure, but what about other variables? I’m not convinced.
True, there are so many factors to consider. Real-world usage varies a lot.
I agree. Plus, how often does one tow 11,000 lbs?
Oh, just what we needed, another overpriced EV truck making news. Because your everyday Joe can totally afford an $80k vehicle. 🙄
177 miles towing a massive trailer? That’s INSANE! Silverado EV sounds like a beast. Imagine all the roadtrips you could take without constant charging stops! lol
Wow, this chevy truck is amazing! 177 miles with towing? Sign me up! 🚛💨
y’all think this gonna beat a real truck with gas? lmao, keep dreaming. i’ll take my F-150 any day.
didn’t know elecric trucks could even tow that much. interesting info, thx for sharing.
so we supposed to pay almost 100k for a tow truck that might run out of juice??? no thanks!
Great, just what we needed, an overpriced electric truck that can’t even go fast. 🙄🚙
yeah, and quieter under load? good luck hearing anything on the highway with that motor whine. 😂
