2019 Subaru STI S209: A Peak Performer With Limitations
The 2019 Subaru STI S209 stands as Subaru’s flagship model for the US market, showcasing the pinnacle of the brand’s engineering prowess. This exclusive vehicle, with only 209 units available, is the most potent and premium car to ever sport the Subaru emblem. It’s meticulously assembled in STI’s small-scale factory in Kiryu, Japan, with merely two to three units meticulously crafted each day.
Under the Hood: Power and Precision
Returning is Subaru’s iconic 2.5-liter EJ25 turbocharged flat-four engine, which has been refined for the S209. Key upgrades include a redesigned intake, a larger HKS turbocharger, and an enhanced exhaust flow. These modifications push the engine to produce 341 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, which translates to a substantial increase of 31 hp and 40 lb-ft over the standard WRX STI. This powerhouse propels the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds, with a top speed of 162 mph. Complementing its upgraded powertrain, the S209 features numerous enhancements in its suspension, steering, aerodynamics, and braking systems, ensuring it outperforms its predecessors on the track.
Driving Dynamics and Performance
Our in-house experts, Joel Stocksdale and Chris McGraw, recently took the S209 for a spin in their respective regions and shared their first-hand experiences with this high-performance machine.
Chris McGraw: So, Joel, what’s your initial take on the 2019 Subaru STI S209?
Joel Stocksdale: When the S209 was released, I was eager to experience it firsthand. Initially, I was skeptical due to the car’s high price and my historically mixed feelings about STIs, particularly the engine’s sluggishness. But after driving it, I was captivated.
CM: Fascinating! I usually revel in the STI’s quirky, old-school character, which made my recent drive in early November a nostalgic joy, especially on winding mountain roads. Unfortunately, I could’ve benefited from winter tires given the cold conditions.
JS: Absolutely, summer tires are not ideal for cold or snowy conditions. Yet in dry, warm weather, the car’s grip is phenomenal. It’s almost unnerving, navigating corners at high speeds. The car sticks to the road like glue, thanks in large part to its tires and all-wheel drive. However, I wouldn’t recommend pushing it to the extreme on public roads—track conditions would be much safer.
Thrill of Driving and Handling
CM: I tested its limits on canyon roads but stopped short of pushing it to the edge. The steering is exceptionally tight and precise. The car was a joy to drive down the zig-zag roads of Lookout Mountain, with its significant elevation drops.
JS: The steering indeed stands out. It provides such direct road feedback, making each drive sensational. The suspension is responsive, the steering intricate, and the shifter feels robust with a short throw. The pedal layout is ideal for effortless rev-matching during downshifts. The engine, consistent with other WRX models, requires high revs to unlock its potential, delivering smooth and potent power once the turbo spools up. Surprisingly, the engine is smoother than expected, making for a more refined feel.
CM: Yes, the turbo boost is quite exhilarating once it engages. However, the car does feel sluggish at low RPMs, especially around town like in downtown Golden, Colorado. On open highways, though, it comes to life. One downside is the exhaust note—I felt it could have been louder to enhance the driving experience.
JS: I agree. A louder exhaust would add to the charm. Nevertheless, the current system offers peace and quiet during long highway drives. Should you want more sound, aftermarket modifications are always an option.
Cost and Value Proposition
CM: The S209’s price is steep, around $65,000. This figure likely means few units sold at the sticker price.
JS: It’s indeed a high cost, considering alternatives like the Shelby GT350, Camaro ZL1, or Challenger Hellcat. Yet, the price reflects the car’s specialized nature. All the fine-tuned enhancements contribute to a unique driving experience that’s simply not available from other manufacturers in this price range. The only comparable alternative might be a fully optioned base Porsche Cayman, which also compromises on power.
Styling and Aesthetic Appeal
CM: Speaking of compromise, let’s discuss the styling.
JS: The S209 has a certain boldness. Though the wings are somewhat excessive, I find the other aero components like dive planes and vents very functional and appealing.
CM: Exactly. While the designs serve a purpose, the cluttered look works surprisingly well. I favor the carbon fiber roof. For color, while the traditional World Rally Blue stands out, I often opt for white, which looks striking against the car’s pink accents.
JS: The interior hasn’t evolved much, remaining plain and somewhat cheap-looking. However, the unique S209 badging and pink accents add some flair. Despite the rudimentary design, it’s functional for those who appreciate Subaru’s focus on performance over luxury.
CM: Yes, it’s not the most luxurious, but it’s distinctive. Even minor details like the pink seatbelts show STI’s pride. All in all, it’s the driving experience that truly sets the S209 apart.
The 2019 Subaru STI S209 is a rare and exhilarating machine that offers a driving experience that’s both engaging and unique. Despite its high price tag, it delivers a blend of power, precision, and exclusivity that’s hard to find elsewhere.
