FYI: Cupra Unveils Terramar Compact Crossover as a Preview of Its U.S. Lineup
Volkswagen Group’s sporty sub-brand Cupra has stepped into the spotlight, revealing its new compact crossover, the Cupra Terramar, during the 2024 America’s Cup in Barcelona.
The Big Reveal: Cupra Terramar
The Cupra Terramar is not just another crossover; it is a glimpse into what American customers can expect from Cupra when it finally enters the U.S. market later this century. The Terramar shares its DNA with the globally acclaimed Volkswagen Tiguan, reflecting the synergy within the Volkswagen Group.
Venturing into America
Although Cupra has yet to venture into U.S. soil, plans are in motion. By March, the brand announced its ambitions to launch two vehicles stateside. The first will be an electric version of the Volkswagen Formentor, another compact crossover wielding the framework of the current Tiguan. The second is projected to be a full-sized SUV manufactured in North America.
Design and Technology
While the Cupra Terramar may not be destined for American showrooms, it lays the foundation for the brand’s future offerings in the U.S. market. The vehicle introduces the latest evolution of Cupra’s design language, a blend of dynamic performance and luxurious attributes. The Terramar boasts advanced technology, such as high-resolution matrix LED headlights, a cutting-edge head-up display, and a premium Sennheiser audio system usually reserved for high-end luxury cars.
Under the Hood
Behind the allure of its design, the Terramar shares many aspects with the newest Volkswagen Tiguan, which premiered towards the end of last year. As the U.S. gears up for its own launch of the Tiguan utilizing the same adaptable MQB platform, Cupra’s upcoming entries reflect this architecture known for its proficiency in gasoline and hybrid powertrains.
Engine Options
Cupra has locked in several petrol powertrains for the Terramar, including a robust 268-horsepower plug-in hybrid option. This plug-in version is expected to include a 19.7kWh battery, similar to the plug-in hybrid variant of the global Tiguan.
Production and Availability
The 2025 Cupra Terramar will roll off the assembly lines at Volkswagen Group’s facility in Győr, Hungary. Delivery to markets where Cupra is available will commence later this year.
From SEAT to Independence
Cupra’s origin traces back to being a performance-focused sub-brand of SEAT, another member of the Volkswagen Group family. However, in 2018, Cupra evolved into an independent brand, distinguished by its portfolio of sporty and emotionally compelling vehicles. While it still offers souped-up versions of SEAT models, it’s gradually introducing standalone products, like the Terramar, which symbolize its unique identity.
