FYI: Denza has unveiled its powerful new electric luxury wagon, the Z9 GT, which will soon challenge rivals like Porsche and BMW in Europe.
Denza Z9 GT: A New Contender in the Performance Wagon Segment
The Denza Z9 GT has officially debuted in China, starting at approximately $47,500. The luxury electric vehicle, backed by BYD, is set to enter the European market soon, where it aims to compete with models like the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo and BMW i5 Touring.
Unleashing Power: A 952 Horsepower Electric Wagon
Performance electric wagons are scarce, making the Z9 GT’s arrival noteworthy, given its trio of electric motors generating nearly 1,000 horsepower. This Denza model, a potential disruptor in the luxury EV space, will be available in both pure electric and plug-in hybrid versions, thus also competing with the likes of the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo.
Key Highlights:
-
Electric Variant: The pure electric Z9 GT comprises three electric motors (one for each rear wheel and one for the front axle), producing a combined 952 horsepower. It accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.4 seconds, aligning closely with the BMW i5 M60’s lower-power wagon.
- Hybrid Variant: The plug-in hybrid version contains a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and three electric motors, expected to deliver slightly more than 1,000 horsepower. This variant hits 62 mph in 3.6 seconds, just two-tenths slower than its EV counterpart.
Impressive Range and Efficiency
Thanks to a 100.1 kWh battery, the Z9 GT EV boasts a range of up to 391 miles (630 km) per charge according to the optimistic Chinese test cycle, likely equating to around 270 miles by more conservative international standards. The PHEV model offers an electric-only range of 125 miles (200 km) and a combined range of 683 miles (1,100 km) with its 38.5 kWh battery.
Luxurious Dimensions and Features
The Z9 GT stands out because of its sheer size, slightly larger than the Taycan and Panamera wagons, promising a more spacious interior. Its design merges elements of a wagon and a fastback, accentuating an extended wheelbase. Inside, the vehicle features a massive central display complimented by smaller screens for the driver and passenger, contributing to a high-end, modern feel.
Additionally, the vehicle replaces traditional side mirrors with cameras displaying feeds on small screens at the dashboard edges. The interior presents a premium ambiance, enhanced by available themes like a distinctive purple palette, ensuring a luxurious and special experience, especially given its competitive pricing.
Competitive Pricing and European Prospects
In China, the Z9 GT’s price ranges between $47,500 and $59,000, depending on the configuration and options. Anticipated import duties will push these prices higher in Europe but should still remain competitive, potentially swaying buyers from established luxury brands.
Denza has deep European connections, originating from a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes in 2010. With BYD recently acquiring full control over the brand, Denza is poised to make a significant impact on the international luxury EV market.
Conclusion
The Denza Z9 GT combines luxury with high performance, entering a niche segment with its robust electric powertrains and refined interior design. As it prepares for its European debut, the big question remains: Will it allure luxury EV buyers away from long-established brands like Porsche and BMW?
