FYI: Malaysia’s Art of Speed festival showcases the country’s thriving and diverse car culture, making it a must-attend event in Southeast Asia’s automotive scene.
Malaysia’s Car Culture Shines at Art of Speed 2024
Malaysia is swiftly positioning itself as a frontrunner in Southeast Asia’s car culture scene. Reflecting on the past decade, the transformation has been remarkable.
In 2014, Asep, the visionary behind Art of Speed, introduced me to this festival. What started as a modest event has grown into Malaysia’s largest car and bike festival, and I have been attending annually ever since.
But 2024 promises to be special. Art of Speed has become a symbol of Malaysia’s unique automotive culture. While countries like Indonesia and Thailand laid early foundations in the realm of car modifications and collections, Malaysia has caught up rapidly, forging its own distinctive identity.
The Evolution of Art of Speed
For a glimpse into this evolution, I encourage everyone to check out the chronicles of the 2014 event and witness the progression over 11 shows to this year’s edition. It’s a testament to the relentless drive and creativity of Malaysian car enthusiasts.
Art of Speed 2024 will showcase a staggering diversity of vehicles, from vintage classics to modern marvels, reflecting the eclectic tastes of the local automotive community. The mix is extraordinary, and that’s what sets Malaysia apart – it’s a melting pot of car cultures, unlike the more niche-focused events like Tokyo Auto Salon.
Highlights of Art of Speed 2024
The Unmissable Displays
Daihtasu Copen & BMW E92
An unusual pairing, the sleek Copen sat next to a wildly modified BMW E92, complete with a widebody kit and deep-dish wheels.
E36 M3
This model turned heads with its flawless exterior and performance modifications.
Classic Perodua
Locally known models don’t miss out on custom treatments. This Perodua, essentially a pickup version of the Daihatsu Mira, was a standout.
The Honda Scene
The Honda community in Malaysia is expanding rapidly, now encompassing cars like the EF Civic from the late 80s and early 90s.
Exotic Imports
Witnessing rarities like the Datsun Sunny California or a Toyota MR-S Modellista Caserta – only 150 of these were made, adding a touch of exclusivity to the festival.
Air-Cooled Marvels
Asep and his team rolled out exceptional air-cooled 911s. The local classic Porsche scene is thriving, highlighted by examples like the Gulf-themed 930 Turbo with a custom TBK front bumper and sleek rims.
The BWB Crew
The Back Wheels Bitches crew seamlessly blended kyusha styles with their own Malaysian flair, presenting cars like the C110 Nissan Skyline (Kenmeri) and a striking camo FC3S Mazda RX-7 drop-top.
Celebrating Diversity
Art of Speed is brimming with variety. From tube bumper 911s, reminiscent of Safari builds, to vibrant designs like a fluorescent yellow RUF Flachbau, each car tells its own story. Picking a single car for the Speedhunters award was no easy feat, but ultimately, a sleek Celica won out for its impeccable style and engine bay presentation.
Focusing on Iconic JDM
The event featured an array of modern classic Japanese cars:
- Nissan Sylvia S13: With a pristine engine bay and authentic modifications.
- A31 Cefiro: A drift scene staple in Southeast Asia.
- BNR34 Skyline GT-R: Embodying the essence of the Omori Factory with its Nismo Series kit and carbon enhancements.
- Porsche 997 Turbo by Nakai-san: A modern RWB build driven around the venue during the opening ceremony.
Honda’s Presence
Not to be overlooked, Honda exhibited a half-carbon Civic EK9 with a K-swap beside a Mugen-themed S660, emphasizing Honda’s role in producing memorable, entry-level sports cars.
Malaysia’s Automotive Pride
Intricately modified cars like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX, complete with carbon fiber and TE37 SL wheels, were on display, showcasing Malaysian automotive craftsmanship.
An Ode to American Muscle
Capping off the event was a Moon-customized Camaro from Thailand, dressed in the iconic yellow and black livery, reminiscent of the 1950s hot rodding era.
Art of Speed is not just a festival; it’s a celebration of the passion and ingenuity that define Malaysian car culture. The anticipation for Art of Speed 2025 is already building, promising another year of groundbreaking automotive excellence.
