### Iconic 1970 Plymouth Superbird Unearthed in Alabama
Over the years, numerous classic cars have been discovered in unusual, abandoned places, but this story of a hidden Plymouth Superbird stands out for its rarity and intrigue. An iconic 1970 model was found cloaked in deep vegetation in Alabama, marking an extraordinary find for car enthusiasts.
### Barry Lee’s Determination Pays Off
The tale, recounted from Tom Cotter’s book, “The HEMI in the Barn,” follows Barry Lee, a businessman with a lifelong dream of owning a 1970 Plymouth Superbird. With only about 1,935 units ever produced, these cars are exceptionally rare, renowned for their performance that once led NASCAR to ban them for being too fast.
Hearing about a hidden Superbird in Alabama, Lee set his sights on uncovering and acquiring it. His discovery revealed the vehicle ensconced in thick bushes, apparently hidden away by its reclusive owner. Despite initial refusals, Lee’s persistence paid off thanks to a heartfelt letter.
### A Heartfelt Approach
Lee’s attempts to reach the owner, Frank Moran, were initially met with silence and disinterest. Following his wife’s advice, he penned a sincere letter expressing his passion and wish to purchase the car. This approach bore fruit a year later when Moran’s son-in-law, George Proux, discovered the letter among Moran’s belongings.
### The Moment of Acquisition
Frank Moran, now hospitalized, had entrusted Proux with power of attorney. Touched by the genuine sentiment in Lee’s letter, Proux reached out to offer Lee the first chance to acquire the Superbird. The deal was sealed by trading Lee’s 1970 factory big-block lime green Road Runner for the legendary Superbird.
In a personal encounter, Moran shared the history of the car’s acquisition—traded for a boat in 1974—and how he eventually grew weary of the constant interest from car enthusiasts. To escape the attention, Moran concealed the Superbird behind his house, where it was gradually entangled by the flora over the years.
### A Restoration Journey Begins
Now in Lee’s possession, the 1970 Plymouth Superbird is on its way to being restored to its former glory. This story not only portrays a rare automotive find but also emphasizes the power of passion and perseverance, making it an inspiring tale for classic car aficionados.
