FYI: Stellantis is advancing aerodynamic technology for its electric trucks by developing a rear diffuser that also serves as a rear bed step, enhancing both efficiency and practicality.
Stellantis Unveils Innovative Aerodynamic Features for Future Electric Trucks
Stellantis is taking its electric trucks to the next level with innovative aerodynamic features designed to improve both efficiency and practicality. The automaker’s US subsidiary recently filed a patent for a dual-purpose deployable rear step that functions as an active diffuser, bringing a new dimension to truck aerodynamics.
A Game-Changing Patent
The patent, officially titled "Vehicle Rear Step and Diffuser System," was filed in late 2023 and made public on July 4. It’s focused on body-on-frame vehicles, including those under the Stellantis-owned Ram brand. The accompanying drawings reveal designs for a rear tailgate specifically for pickup trucks.
Key Features of the Rear Step and Diffuser System
- Dual Functionality: This rear step isn’t just for accessing the truck bed. It also works as an active diffuser, enhancing aerodynamic efficiency when deployed.
- Active Aerodynamics: The diffuser creates an upward airflow from underneath the vehicle, balancing the downward airflow from above. This helps increase downforce and reduce drag, crucial for improving the range of electric vehicles.
- Retractable Design: Unlike traditional diffusers that might protrude when not in use, this system retracts seamlessly into the rear bumper, ensuring no parts are sticking out unnecessarily.
Inspiration from the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV
The design closely mirrors features seen in the 2023 Ram 1500 Revolution BEV concept showcased at the CES consumer technology trade show. While the concept itself isn’t going into production, it serves as a preview of potential design innovations for upcoming electric Ram trucks. Another exciting feature from the concept is a third-row jump seat, indicating Stellantis’s focus on maximizing utility and comfort.
Comparisons with Other Automakers
The idea of an active diffuser isn’t completely new. Honda and Porsche have previously filed patents for similar features, and Stellantis-owned Opel revealed an electric crossover concept with an active diffuser last year. However, Stellantis’s approach is unique in combining the diffuser with a practical step, an innovation that sets it apart.
Looking Ahead
Although the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV is not confirmed for production, the patent filings and concept features hint at what we can expect from Stellantis’s future electric truck lineup. Enhancing both aerodynamic performance and practical functionality could give Stellantis a significant edge in the increasingly competitive electric truck market.
Stellantis’s commitment to innovation is evident as it strives to improve range through smart design, making upcoming electric trucks not only better for the environment but also more user-friendly for everyday tasks.
