FYI: Exploring the Realities of Long-Term EV Ownership with the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4
Navigating the world of electric vehicles (EVs) can often feel like diving into a complex maze of technical jargon and uncharted territories. While enthusiasts might relish discussing battery cell types and charging efficiencies, the real challenge for many families lies in the practicalities of integrating an EV into their daily routines. To offer a clear-eyed perspective, YouTube musician and comedian Craig Benzine, better known as WheezyWaiter, has shared his candid experience of owning a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 for three years.
Real-Life EV Experience
Craig’s video steers clear of technical experiments and sensational claims. Instead, it focuses on the day-to-day living with an EV, answering the question: What’s it really like to own a Volkswagen ID.4?
Starting with the big question, Craig asks his wife, "Do you like having an electric vehicle?" Her response, "I do, almost 100% of the time," sums up a balanced viewpoint – acknowledging both the perks and the challenges of EV ownership.
The Upsides of ID.4 Ownership
Home Charging: One of the biggest conveniences for Craig’s family has been their ability to charge at home using solar panels. Craig estimates the installation costs can range from $200 to $1,000. While this setup isn’t accessible to everyone, it underscores the potential for cost savings and energy independence.
Minimal Maintenance: The family reports that maintenance has been minimal, primarily consisting of wiper fluid replacements and tire rotations. The quiet ride and instant torque provided by the electric motor are also major plus points for them.
The Charge Network Challenge
The couple’s most significant issue? The availability of charging stations. "We need more chargers," Craig comments, with his wife, Chyna, adding, "If there were even half as many fast-chargers as gas stations, we’d be set."
Despite the burgeoning growth of the fast-charging network in the U.S., there’s still a gap. Craig advises that EVs should be plugged in as much as possible, even if only into regular wall outlets, to keep them ready for use. However, he recognizes situations where rapid charging is necessary, especially on road trips. Unplanned stops for charging can sometimes extend travel time, but they’ve found unexpected benefits in discovering new places during these breaks.
The Future Looks Bright
Craig remains optimistic about the future of EVs: "It is improving, and eventually, I assume, the dam is going to break." Despite some inconveniences on longer trips, his overall experience with the Volkswagen ID.4 has been positive. Both he and his wife have no regrets and foresee continuing with electric vehicles in the future.
As the couple humorously notes, the ideal scenario would be to have robust high-speed rail and affordable flying robotaxis, but for now, they’re content with their EV journey.
