FYI: An EV accessory maker is striving to ensure that their Supercharger extension cords align with Tesla’s stringent safety standards.
EV Accessory Manufacturer Cooperates with Tesla on Supercharger Extension Cord Safety
An electric vehicle (EV) accessory manufacturer has proactively initiated discussions with Tesla, aiming to validate that their Supercharger extension cords meet the automotive giant’s rigorous safety standards. This initiative follows recent concerns raised by Tesla’s lead engineer concerning the potential hazards associated with using aftermarket extension cords at Tesla Supercharger stations.
Tesla Engineer Raises Safety Concerns
Earlier this week, Wes Morrill, the lead engineer on Tesla Cybertruck, responded to an inquiry from an EV owner regarding A2Z EV/EVSE’s soon-to-be-released NACS DC extension cord. Morrill cautioned that such aftermarket extension cords might pose risks, citing instances where cables had overheated or shorted.
"There’s a temperature measurement in the handle, and the Supercharger derates based on that temperature. The addition of an extension cable removes this safety feature and introduces an additional junction that generates heat, exacerbating the problem," Morrill explained in a post on X, Tesla’s social media platform.
Commitment to Safety and Collaboration
In response, A2Z EV/EVSE has expressed their eagerness to collaborate with Tesla to ensure their products do not compromise safety. The accessory maker emphasized that their DC extension cord is equipped with multiple safety systems and will not be available to customers until it passes comprehensive safety tests.
"We truly appreciate the opportunity to discuss this further with you and understand your arguments. Safety is paramount to us," A2Z EV/EVSE commented in a public post, responding to Morrill’s concerns.
Open to Feedback and Improvement
A2Z EV/EVSE has already reached out to Tesla’s engineer to seek his expert opinion and incorporate any necessary adjustments based on his feedback. "We are open to a collaboration with Tesla," the accessory maker stated, emphasizing their commitment to improving their product based on professional insights from Tesla’s team.
Tesla’s Track Record with Aftermarket Accessories
Tesla has a history of engaging with aftermarket accessory manufacturers to ensure product safety and compatibility. Earlier this year, Tesla reached an agreement with EVject, creator of the popular "Escape Connector," which initially faced legal challenges from Tesla. Following significant feedback from the EV community and an intervention by Elon Musk, Tesla decided to collaborate with EVject, highlighting Tesla’s willingness to work with OEMs on innovative solutions.
In a recent statement from its official Tesla Charging account, the company reiterated its openness to partnerships aimed at developing safe and reliable accessories. "Tesla and OEMs will continue working with the industry to provide safe adapters and develop common-sense regulatory standards," the statement affirmed.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, the dialogue between Tesla and A2Z EV/EVSE marks a promising step toward ensuring the safety and reliability of Supercharger extension cords. Collaboration between EV manufacturers and accessory providers is crucial for advancing the technology while maintaining high safety standards for all users.
