FYI: The 100% tariff on China-made electric vehicles goes into effect on August 1st, potentially impacting the Polestar 2 made in China. Stay tuned for more updates on automotive.fyi.
Three years after exploring the electric vehicle scene with Hyundai’s Kona Electric, I find myself behind the wheel of a blueish-grey Polestar 2 once more. The EV world has changed dramatically since 2021, bringing in an array of new competitors that promise greater range and features at competitive prices.
A Glimpse Back: The Kona Electric and Early Polestar 2
Back in 2021, I navigated the challenges of using public charging infrastructure as a renter without access to home charging. Hyundai had loaned me a Kona Electric, a vehicle that was revolutionary at its time but has since seen significant evolutions. Shortly after, a blueish-grey Polestar 2 became my steed. Fast forward to today, and the EV market’s maturation is undeniable.
Progress in the EV Market
The current EV market boasts more affordable options with improved range capabilities compared to the models from three years ago. Hyundai’s Kona Electric has morphed into a larger, distinctly new model. Similarly, the Polestar 2 underwent significant technical improvements to stay relevant amidst fierce competition.
Polestar 2’s Recent Upgrades
To the casual observer, the new Polestar 2’s exterior changes might seem subtle. It sports a filled-in grille and an optional 19-inch aero wheel, but the real transformations are under the hood.
Breaking Down the 2024 Polestar 2
- Drive System: The 2024 Polestar 2 has transitioned from front-wheel-drive (FWD) to a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) setup.
- Performance: The former single-motor FWD model offered 231 horsepower, achieving 0-60 MPH in 7 seconds and a range of 270 miles. The new RWD model boasts a significant leap with 299 horsepower, 361 ft-lbs of torque, hitting 0-60 in just 5.9 seconds.
- Battery and Range: The new model’s more efficient motor, paired with an 82 kWh battery, allows up to 320 miles on a single charge.
- Charging Speed: Now capable of supporting up to 205 kW DC fast charging, dramatically reducing charging times.
Impacts of the EV Tariff
A significant development in the industry is the 100% tariff on electric vehicles manufactured in China, set to commence on August 1st. This tariff could heavily affect the Polestar 2, although the brand has yet to specify the impacts. As of February, due to high demand, Polestar stopped taking custom orders for their entry-level model.
Competitive Landscape and Leasing Deals
Polestar is aggressively marketing attractive lease deals for the Polestar 2, with monthly rates as low as $299. Yet, they are not alone in this race. Brands like Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, and Chevrolet are all offering compelling deals on their electric models, often matching or surpassing those from Polestar.
Conclusion
The world of electric vehicles is rapidly evolving, with manufacturers consistently pushing the envelope on performance, range, and value. The 2024 Polestar 2 stands as a testament to these advancements with its robust upgrades and competitive edge.
I’m eager to dive deeper into the Polestar 2 over the coming week. What aspects would you like to learn more about? Wow the Polester 2 sounds so cool now!!! I love how they made it RWD and more powerful. 299 horsepower is amazing!!!
This EV tarrif from China is such a bad idea!!! It will make cars more expensive and we already pay so much for everything. Stupid government.
did you know that rear-wheel drive is better for performance?? that’s why race cars use it, the polestar 2 will be much better for driving fast now.
Okay, so they made the Polestar 2 more powerful, but good luck trying to afford one after this 100% tariff. Are you kidding me? Might as well just walk everywhere.
Great, another car I can’t afford even if the lease is low. Who even has charging station near them? This is all just pointless.
I know right?? They talk like everyone can just plug in their car at home. Not realistic at all.
