FYI: Mercedes-Benz AMG Honors the End of an Era with AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport at Monterey Car Week 2024
Mercedes-Benz AMG Takes a Bow to its Iconic GT3 Race Car
Monterey Car Week 2024 in California served as the stage where Mercedes-Benz AMG unveiled its farewell to the celebrated GT3 race car, rooted in the former AMG GT sports car.
On Friday, the AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport made its debut, marking AMG’s final naturally aspirated GT3 race car. This special edition not only signifies the end of an era but also honors Mercedes-Benz’s 130-year legacy in motorsport—a history that began with the victorious automobiles in the 1894 Paris to Rouen race powered by engines from Daimler, which later became Mercedes-Benz.
Limited Production and Unique Features
Only 13 units of the AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport will be produced. These cars are not homologated for any specific racing series, making them exclusive track day toys while giving engineers the liberty to incorporate elements typically forbidden in sanctioned races.
Key Specifications:
- Engine: Unrestricted 6.3-liter V-8 delivering 671 hp
- Aerodynamics: Enhanced package boosts downforce by 15% with a new front splitter, vents in the fenders, redesigned side skirts, underbody adjustments, and a rear diffuser.
- Speed: Capable of exceeding 196 mph, aided by the innovative aerodynamic setup including a redesigned rear wing integrated with a drag reduction system. The front splitter is extendable for maximum efficiency.
Design and Tribute
Inside and out, the AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport pays homage to Mercedes-Benz’s rich racing history. The exterior livery draws inspiration from the W194 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL gullwing race car of 1952, the company’s first fixed-roof racer. The interior takes cues from the 1955 Mercedes-Benz SLR 300, featuring blue checkered fabric on the seats, brown leather on the headrests and door loops, and a custom steering wheel adorned with walnut wood handles.
Pricing and Future Outlook
The AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport is priced starting at €1.03 million (approximately $1.135 million).
While the curtain closes on the highly successful naturally aspirated AMG GT3, excitement is building for its successor. A new turbocharged GT3 race car, based on the latest GT Coupe, has already been announced. Developed by Affalterbach Racing, AMG’s newly established customer racing division, this new model is slated to hit tracks in the 2025 motorsport season.
