Growing Tourism and Automotive Culture in Post-Pandemic Japan
During my extensive time in Japan, the recent surge in tourism following the pandemic reopening has been unprecedented. With global restrictions easing, Japan has become a hotspot for travelers eager to experience its culture, cuisine, and for car enthusiasts, the vibrant automotive scene it offers. The rise in visitors is reflected in the increased interest in iconic car parks like Daikoku and Sea Fireflies, which have become popular for automotive gatherings and tours highlighting Japan’s rich car culture.
Immersive JDM Experiences
For anyone passionate about cars, Japan is a dream destination. This burgeoning interest has birthed various opportunities for tourists to immerse themselves in the world of Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) automobiles through rental experiences. Numerous companies now offer enthusiasts the chance to drive cars they’ve only admired from afar, such as the Toyota GR Yaris or the legendary Nissan R35 GT-R.
The Rise of the Driver Lounge
One standout provider of such experiences is the Driver Lounge, located just outside Tokyo. More than just a rental service, it offers an all-encompassing car enthusiast’s experience. Under the leadership of car enthusiast and Asian motorsport series participant Clement, the lounge offers a curated fleet of eight remarkable vehicles, including the A90 Toyota Supra and the Spoon Sports’ Honda S660.
Unique Touring Options
What sets the Driver Lounge apart is its provision for multiple vehicle switches during the tours. It allows participants to experience various driving dynamics in a single excursion. Their tours range from a 10-hour exploration of Hakone to shorter yet equally thrilling drives across different scenic routes. These tours are meticulously planned to ensure maximum enjoyment, complete with necessary preparations like filled gas tanks and electronic toll cards.
A Day on the Road
Recently, I embarked on a memorable journey with the Driver Lounge. The tour began with a brief orientation and logistics session at the lounge’s comfortable headquarters. From there, I experienced a series of drives, each offering a distinct flavor characteristic of Japan’s automotive culture.
Starting my day driving the GR Yaris, I transitioned through a diverse lineup, including the DC5 Type-R and the mighty R35 GT-R. Each car, equipped with performance upgrades like aftermarket suspension and enhanced brakes, provided a unique thrill. The variety in layouts – from all-wheel to front-wheel and rear-wheel drive – ensured no two drives felt the same.
The Route and Scenery
The tour route elegantly intertwined Japan’s scenic beauty with its intricate roadways, such as the Ashinoko skyline and the Hakone Turnpike. Each stop offered picturesque views, from the serene Lake Ashi to the majestic Mount Fuji, perfect for capturing unforgettable photos.
Reflections
By day’s end, I realized this wasn’t just about driving cars; it was about connecting with a culture that venerates speed, engineering, and aesthetics. These experiences on Japan’s best driving roads illustrate why Japan remains a haven for car enthusiasts from around the globe.
