FYI: Driving the 2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail convinced me it’s time to sell my 17-year-old GX 470 due to its superior road performance, impressive visibility, and overall driving comfort.

## A New Era of Luxury SUVs: The Lexus GX 550 Overtrail
This past spring, I had the pleasure of test-driving several Lexus and Toyota crossovers and SUVs. One particular model, the 2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail, captivated my interest and made me believe it was time to upgrade from my old GX 470. I’m Donald Smith, editor at automotive.fyi, here to share my in-depth experience with this impressive vehicle and how it could be the next big step for luxury SUV enthusiasts.
### First Impressions: Built to Impress
As soon as I settled into the driver’s seat of the GX 550 Overtrail, I felt an immediate connection with the vehicle. Everything about it just felt right—akin to the sensation of driving a classic Porsche 911. The interior layout ensures excellent visibility, putting all controls exactly where you expect them to be. The GX 550 exudes confidence and comfort before you even start the engine.
### Not Just Another Pretty Face
Although the appearance of the new Lexus GX might not be universally appealing, it didn’t take long for me to be won over by its performance capabilities. Despite its automatic transmission, heavy build, and substantial fuel consumption, this luxury SUV stands out in its class. If you’re considering a high-end SUV, the Lexus GX should be on your shortlist.
### Performance: Road and Trail Competence
I’ve tackled several trails and typical off-road features around my home with the GX 550 Overtrail and was impressed with its out-of-the-box accomplishments. While I haven’t pushed it to the extreme, it’s clear this SUV is designed to excel off-road without needing a lift kit.
What truly surprised me was its on-road prowess. Unlike traditional tall, boxy SUVs with a solid rear axle, the GX 550 handles corners admirably, thanks to its perfectly tuned suspension. Although it’s not a sports car, it manages high speeds with surprising agility and maintains the quiet, comfortable ride expected of a Lexus.
### From Old to New: Saying Goodbye to the GX 470
My trusty old GX 470 was in solid mechanical shape but clearly showed its age—especially the worn paint. It was perfect for rugged adventures, not worrying about scratches or what the kids were up to in the backseat. However, its age made it less suitable for more formal occasions.
I eventually decided to sell my old GX 470 to Zach Wickliffe, who’d expressed interest for a while. Before handing over the keys, I spent considerable time cleaning it inside and out and ensuring it was mechanically sound. Despite some lingering doubts about parting with a car packed with memories, I felt confident it was moving to a good home in the Pacific Northwest.
### Conclusion: Evaluating the Move to a New GX
Transitioning from the classic GX 470 to a new GX 550 Overtrail seemed inevitable—but not without its hitches. My fellow writer Daniel pointed out the financial practicality of leasing another white SUV instead, which I’ll delve into in a future article.

In summary, the 2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail stands as an exceptional choice for luxury SUV buyers, seamlessly blending formidable performance with high-end comfort. Whether for off-road adventures or city driving, this model holds its own, making it a compelling consideration for an upgrade.
