Exploring the Future: The Lamborghini Lanzador EV Concept
MONTEREY, Calif. — Being handed the keys to a concept car by Lamborghini is a rare experience. Even rarer is the opportunity to drive the Lamborghini Lanzador Concept, a preview of the brand’s future electric hypercar expected in 2028.
A handful of select media, including Automotive.fyi, had the privilege to test this one-of-a-kind vehicle. The Lanzador, unveiled at Monterey Car Week, gives a glimpse into Lamborghini’s all-electric future.
"It Looks Like a Spaceship"
Unveiling this futuristic model in Monterey surprised industry experts. The Lanzador remains distinctly Lamborghini, albeit with unexpected design choices. Contrary to expectations of a GT-style sports tourer with a 2+2 seating arrangement, Lamborghini chose a two-door coupe configuration that might change by the time it hits production.
Its high ride height, ground clearance, and low roofline give it a unique crossover-like silhouette. Signature elements include a shark-like front profile, a strong shoulder line, and a sporty, angular rear.
Mitja Borkert, Lamborghini’s design chief, explained, "The starting point is to raise the proportions of a super sports car to the pilot’s position. Our trademark center line design ensures that every model we make is unmistakably Lamborghini. The Lanzador, in its current form, embodies that spirit while resembling a spaceship."
Inside the Lanzador
The interior feels even more futuristic. Its floating dashboard, angular features, and thinly cushioned seats set a dramatic tone. The seating is low but elevated compared to traditional sports cars, offering a unique driving position.
Lamborghini’s chief technical officer, Ruben Mohr, stressed the importance of this design philosophy. “The seating is lower than in our current models, giving a sense of driving our supercars despite the higher stance,” he explained. “We’re also refining our EV sound experience to make it more responsive and authentic, enhancing the driver’s connection to the car.”
Driving the Lanzador: An Experimental Experience
Getting into the Lanzador necessitated careful handling by Lamborghini engineers, reflecting its fragile, concept stage. Once inside, the combination of the airy "greenhouse" cabin and futuristic design elements transports you to a different realm.
Mohr emphasized the importance of this opportunity, stating, “It’s a privilege to have people drive this true show car as it embodies our vision for an all-electric Lamborghini.” He added that while the development process is ongoing, the Lanzador concept is only a starting point.
Lamborghini envisions the Lanzador’s production model boasting over one megawatt of peak power, roughly translating to 1,340 horsepower—expected Lamborghini levels of performance. However, this prototype wasn’t built to showcase its full potential.
The Raw Driving Experience
Driving the Lanzador can be summarized with one word: "raw." The mechanical noises, heavy steering, and stiff brake pedal underline Lamborghini’s focus on a performance-first approach. The production version will feature dual motors, one on each axle, with the rear motor capable of "torque vectoring," distributing power between rear wheels for optimal handling.
Mohr highlighted that maintaining the quintessential Lamborghini driving feel is crucial. “We want to ensure that even as a fully electric car, the Lanzador delivers that unique Lamborghini experience. It’s not just about acceleration; it’s about the complete driving experience.”
A Comfortable but Sporty Ride
Driving the Lanzador on Pebble Beach’s 17-Mile Drive, even at lower speeds, offered a glimpse into its potential as an "ultra-GT." The cabin feels more spacious than a traditional sports car, and the higher seating position provides a commanding yet sporty driving feel. However, visibility is slightly compromised by the raked windshield and bonnet.
This drive suggests that Lamborghini aims to combine the comfort of an SUV with the raw power of a sports car, potentially making the Lanzador a perfect blend of these elements. Engineers might opt for louder engine sounds and heavier controls to keep the driver fully engaged.
Conclusion
Lamborghini is venturing into the electric future with the Lanzador Concept. With over 1,000 horsepower, active aerodynamics, and a design philosophy that merges comfort with raw sports car feel, the Lanzador promises a unique and engaging driving experience.
Whether an electric motor can evoke the same passion as a roaring V12 remains to be seen, but Lamborghini is making a compelling case with the Lanzador. As development progresses, it’s clear that Lamborghini is committed to preserving its legacy while embracing the electric future.
