Just Say "Rolls-Royce": The Pearl of Luxury Automobiles
When discussing top-tier quality, the word "best" falls flat. The phrase "A Rolls-Royce of…" immediately conveys a standard unparalleled in its field, transcending even into daily commodities like vacuum cleaners. Rolls-Royce symbolizes the zenith of human engineering and luxury, and the arrival of a Rolls-Royce at your doorstep signifies a special occasion. Featured today is the crown jewel of SUVs, the 2020 Rolls-Royce Cullinan, a stunning $394,275 marvel.
The Cullinan’s grandeur was highlighted in its gleaming Jubilee Silver finish, a marked upgrade from the purple facade driven by other reviewers. This vehicle showcases as though it’s sculpted from a monolithic block of pure silver. Dubbed a monolith in our initial 2018 review, this massive three-ton SUV commands attention akin to a British warship and certainly lives up to its legacy. The two-tone Charles Blue and navy blue interior masterfully complements this maritime aesthetic, while hand-painted coachlines further accentuate its historic roots.
Named after the world’s largest diamond, the 3,100-carat Cullinan diamond, this SUV embodies opulence. Despite its many German-made components, it remains a powerful emblem of British engineering.
First Impressions
Reviewers at Automotive.fyi often question the utility of a Rolls-Royce press car. Could it be less than spectacular? The Cullinan doesn’t disappoint. The V12 engine purrs smoothly, reminiscent of English cream. The luxurious cabin boasts an expansive interior, cushy seats, and a ride true to Rolls-Royce’s "magic carpet" promise. Advanced sensors adjust the air suspension in real-time to ensure a seamless landing experience, while self-righting wheel centers stand as testament to its impeccable design.
Audience and Appeal
While not many readers have the financial capability to procure such an opulent vehicle, those who do might opt for a Range Rover or Bentley Bentayga for something less conspicuous. Interestingly, while billionaire Bill Gates favors Porsches, Rolls-Royces maintain their appeal among athletes and musicians. In 2019, Rolls-Royce saw a 25% rise in sales, largely attributed to the Cullinan.
Rolls-Royce may offer press vehicles to share its craftsmanship with a broader audience. Although this particular Cullinan lacks certain luxury accessories, such as a tea service or reclining rear seats, it remains a masterpiece, comparable to timeless cathedrals. You may choose to admire or ignore it, much like any revered artwork.
Sonic Symphony on Wheels
You may never drive a Rolls-Royce or hear classical music in it, but the Cullinan ensures you experience auditory nirvana. The Bespoke Audio System’s 18 speakers and 1,300 watts make for an audio experience perfect for Rachmaninoff or Elgar. Even if Yacht Rock radio isn’t your preference, you’ll appreciate the sonic clarity. Moreover, BMW Blog’s playlist could tailor your sound experience to perfection.
The Cullinan’s center stack, crafted from Circassian walnut, offers a luxurious tactile experience. Buttons and dials operate smoothly, while the entire cabin is swathed in premium leather, ensuring a plush environment. The electronic closing feature on the doors spares your attire from wrinkles, embodying convenience and elegance.
Rear Seat Luxury
The rear seating area is equally impressive. With spacious accommodations and nifty features like a fold-down desk and infotainment capabilities mirroring the front console, the rear passengers experience unparalleled comfort. Touch screens and a control knob offer ease of function and a user-friendly interface reminiscent of BMW systems.
Performance
Powered by a 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12, the Cullinan commands 571 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. Featuring a Rolls-Royce Power Reserve Meter instead of a tachometer, the vehicle emanates elegance even in performance metrics. Despite its heft, the Cullinan never struggles, maintaining ample power even on steep inclines.
Off-road features include a button for raising the air suspension by 40mm, enhancing traction, and modifying braking for better off-road control. However, driving a Cullinan off-road is surreal; it’s designed for a stately pace, not aggressive maneuvers.
Luggage Capacity
As an SUV, the Cullinan does not disappoint in practicality. The luggage compartment, about 20 cubic feet, featured a clever “T” shape that made fitting six suitcases a breeze. Utilizing the space effectively allowed visibility and storage of additional materials, making it suitable for both luxurious and practical needs.
A minor inconvenience tied to its luxury—cleaning the lambswool floor mats, which would undoubtedly be left to a chauffeur.
