Tesla’s Cybertruck Gains Enhanced Off-Road Capabilities with New Software Update
The Tesla Cybertruck has received a significant upgrade, as an over-the-air software update has introduced a robust off-road mode, designed to enhance the truck’s trail-driving capabilities. This eagerly awaited feature adds multiple off-road drive modes, each tailored for specific driving conditions, and brings mechanical locking differentials into play.
Enhanced Off-Road Modes: Overland, Baja, and Wade
Tesla revealed plans for Off-Road Mode back in May, and now the rollout is complete. A recently released video showcases the Cybertruck navigating the challenging trails of Moab, illustrating the practical applications of its new off-road capabilities.

Overland Mode: Geared towards slow-speed, technical driving, Overland Mode focuses on precision and control. This mode is ideal for tackling rocky terrains and steep inclines.

Baja Mode: Designed for high-speed driving on loose surfaces such as sand and gravel, Baja Mode includes a customizable touchscreen slider. This slider allows drivers to adjust the handling balance, enhancing stability or simulating a shorter wheelbase for tighter cornering and drifting.
- Wade Mode: Wade Mode elevates the vehicle’s ride height and pumps pressurized air into the battery compartment to keep water out. With this mode activated, the Cybertruck can wade through water up to 32 inches deep. Note that this feature can be used for 30 minutes at a time and requires up to 10 minutes to pressurize the battery compartment.
Trail Assist and Hill Control Features
Off-Road Mode also brings Trail Assist, which maintains a set low speed, and includes Hill Descent and Hill Ascent Control. These features are accessible via the touchscreen, providing the driver with exceptional control during steep climbs or descents. Additionally, controls for the roof-mounted light bar are integrated into the system, enhancing visibility during night-time driving.
Mechanical Locking Differentials
Apart from software updates, the Cybertruck is equipped with mechanical locking differentials that can be managed through the central touchscreen. The dual-motor variant features independently actuated front and rear lockers. The tri-motor "Cyberbeast" version has a front locker and utilizes two rear motors to mimic a rear locker, similar to GMC’s Hummer EV tri-motor setup.
From Concept to Reality
Tesla began delivering the first production Cybertrucks in December 2023, after a two-year delay from the initial concept reveal in November 2019. While the production model closely mirrors the concept’s controversial, futuristic design, it comes at a higher cost and offers a shorter range than initially promised. However, the new off-road mode reaffirms Tesla’s commitment to fulfilling some of its earlier capabilities.
