Autoblog to Shut Down After 20 Years of Coverage
Friday, September 13, 2024
The automotive news industry received a shock today: Autoblog.com will cease operations. The site, which began its journey with a mission to cover all facets of automotive news, has been a pillar in the industry for two decades. Despite sometimes rocky relationships with competitors, many agree that Autoblog and its team deserved a better fate.
A Journey Through Time
From AOL Autos to Autoblog: A Personal Recollection
I began my career at AOL Autos, which shared offices and ownership with Autoblog. We eventually merged teams under the stewardship of Sharon Carty, who became the editor-in-chief. During my time at these publications, I connected with many influential figures in the industry, including Steve Ewing, John Neff, and Mike Austin.
Our community of automotive writers is tight-knit. We occasionally faced challenges, but for the most part, we were driven by a shared passion for cars and storytelling.
Memorable Moments
Steve Ewing: A Road Trip to Remember
Steve Ewing and I bonded during a road trip that spanned half the country. Autoblog had two long-term test vehicles: a Hyundai Veloster in Detroit and a Mazda 6 in California. We decided to meet halfway. Over the course of this trip, we shared many experiences ranging from watching bootlegged Simpsons episodes in obscure motels to racking up speeding tickets. This journey forged a bond that would last for years.
The High-Stakes World of Car Shows
One of our most intense memories involved covering car shows. Our dedication was akin to war correspondents covering a conflict, ensuring every detail was covered. Post-event celebrations at whiskey bars were common, followed by early morning returns to the grind. These experiences fostered a sense of camaraderie, making us feel like a close-knit family.
Final Words from Former Staff
John Neff – Former Editor in Chief
"I helmed Autoblog for its first decade, from 2004 to 2014. During that time, we often competed fiercely with Jalopnik. I learned that a website’s success relies heavily on its team. When staff feel valued, the outcome is usually positive. If not, the results can be dismal. Although I haven’t been involved with Autoblog for a decade, I hope its legacy endures."
Mike Austin – Former Editor in Chief
"It’s heartbreaking to see Autoblog’s transformation into yet another venture capitalist-owned zombie site. Working there was exhilarating, thanks to the incredibly talented team. We faced daunting challenges, but it was that shared determination that made us successful. I fondly remember the fun times amidst the hard work and take pride in what we achieved."
Steve Ewing – Former Editor
"I was part of Autoblog for seven years, transitioning it from a whimsical blog to a more professional outlet. The camaraderie and dedication were unparalleled. We worked tirelessly to stay ahead of the curve, and it paid off. My time at Autoblog taught me to be a better writer and editor, and helped me form lifelong friendships."
Autoblog’s Lasting Legacy
Despite its closure, Autoblog’s influence on the automotive journalism landscape remains immense. From in-depth car reviews and buying guides to podcasts and video content, the site was a one-stop resource for automotive enthusiasts. The passion and hard work of its team turned it into one of the most influential sites in the automotive world.
FYI: Autoblog may be closing, but its two-decade-long journey of passionately covering the automotive world is a legacy that will not soon be forgotten. For more insights and updates, reach out to us at tips@automotive.fyi, or on Twitter @automotivefyi.
