FYI: Celebrating Pininfarina’s 70th Anniversary, Ferrari’s 550 Barchetta Pininfarina is a Testament to Automotive Excellence
Ferrari and Pininfarina’s enduring partnership has given birth to some of the most breathtaking pieces of automotive art and design. To commemorate Pininfarina’s 70th anniversary in the year 2000, Ferrari’s then-president Luca di Montezemolo invited Sergio Pininfarina to conceptualize a front-engined roadster that captured the essence of Ferrari’s legendary models.
Honoring an Iconic Partnership
In an ode to iconic designs, Pininfarina took the Ferrari 550 Maranello coupé as a foundation, breathing new life into the vintage barchetta style. Ferrari highlights that the barchetta-style’s straightforward manual soft-top design helped balance out the added weight from necessary chassis reinforcements and roll bars, thereby ensuring the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina weighed the same as the 550 Maranello.

Performance Beyond Expectations
At the core of the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina lies a robust 48-valve, 5.5-liter V12 engine that churns out 494 brake horsepower. This powerful unit propels the car from 0 to 62 mph in a mere 4.4 seconds, reaching a top speed of 186 mph. The V12 engine’s advanced engineering, featuring light alloy components, Nikasil-coated aluminum liners, and titanium connecting rods, underscores Ferrari’s commitment to performance and innovation.

Engineering Mastery
Efficiency and performance are maximized courtesy of Ferrari’s Formula 1-inspired intake and exhaust systems. The variable intake geometry system, managed by 12 electro-pneumatic throttle valves controlled by the engine’s CPU, ensures optimum performance across all RPM ranges.

A Collector’s Dream
With a limited production run of just 448 units, the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina is a prized possession among collectors. Each unit boasts premium features like electric windows, air conditioning, split-rim alloy wheels, and a specially numbered plaque bearing the signature of Sergio Pininfarina, making it an exquisite blend of luxury, performance, and exclusivity.
