FYI: The 2026 Honda Passport promises to be Honda’s most capable SUV yet, featuring a revamped TrailSport trim designed for rugged adventures.
Honda to Take Off-Roading to New Heights with the 2026 Passport TrailSport
Honda is gearing up to release a redesigned Passport for the 2026 model year, and it’s promising big things, particularly for fans of off-roading. Engineers have been spotted testing a prototype of this next-gen SUV, which will, notably, include the rugged TrailSport trim.
A Closer Look at the TrailSport Prototype
Based on recent sightings, the TrailSport model is poised to stand out with its amber-colored daytime running lights—a feature that will be exclusive to this trim, as Honda announced in July. This addition will be a clear indicator of the vehicle’s enhanced capabilities aimed at off-road enthusiasts.
The prototype is also equipped with General Grabber All-Terrain Sport tires—275/60 dimensions wrapped around 18-inch wheels—which are notably wider than those found on the current Passport TrailSport model and even more substantial than the rubber on the 2023 Pilot TrailSport.
Key Off-Road Features
- Short Rear Overhang: Improved departure angles, critical for off-roading.
- Exhaust Pipe Routing: Specifically designed to consider off-road challenges.
- Chunky Roof Rails: Adds an extra sense of rugged appeal and utility.
Honda has made bold claims that the new Passport TrailSport will be the brand’s most capable SUV yet.
Teaser Photos and New Design Elements
In July, Honda released teaser photos showcasing what’s in store for the TrailSport. These images revealed a more rugged and squared-off front end across all models in the upcoming Passport lineup. Also notable is the taller, squared-off rear cargo hold—ideal for those long outdoor adventures.
Inside, a traditional hood for the gauge cluster and a separate infotainment screen positioned atop the center stack were spotted, hinting at a mix of practicality and advanced tech.
Advanced Underpinning and Revised Platform
The new Passport will sit on Honda’s Global Light Truck Platform, shared with the Pilot and Acura MDX. This modern platform is stiffer than its predecessor, promising enhanced driving dynamics.
Tuning Tailored for TrailSport
Expect unique tuning for the Passport TrailSport’s stabilizer bars, spring rates, and damper valves, akin to the setup in the Pilot TrailSport. Anticipate increased ground clearance, an essential upgrade for robust off-roading.
Under the Hood
While specifics remain under wraps, it’s plausible the redesigned Passport will carry the same powertrain as the Pilot—a 285-hp 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain combination should provide ample power for both highway cruising and rugged trails.
Stay tuned for more updates as Honda progresses with development on what promises to be an exhilarating addition to its SUV lineup.
