The 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 Sets New Standards with NACS Inlet
In a significant milestone for electric vehicles (EV), Hyundai has introduced the 2025 IONIQ 5, the first non-Tesla EV equipped with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) inlet. This innovation enables drivers to connect directly to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network without the need for an adapter, simplifying the charging process and expanding charging options.
Revolutionizing Charging Access
Hyundai’s bold move was first decided in October of the previous year, and it has now come to fruition with the launch of the new IONIQ 5. This groundbreaking model will be available to customers later this year, and is the first vehicle outside of Tesla to support direct plug-in at Superchargers. This advancement is set to double the size of the DC fast-charging network accessible to IONIQ 5 users. Additionally, these vehicles will also come equipped with a Combined Charging System (CCS) adapter for enhanced versatility.
“In launching the 2025 IONIQ 5, we aim to boost customer satisfaction by incorporating Tesla’s NACS port,” noted Hyundai. They further explained that the port provides access to over 17,000 Superchargers across North America without the need for an adapter. Hyundai also confirmed that starting in Q4 2024, all their new or refreshed EV models will feature the NACS port exclusively.
Expanding the EV Landscape
Tesla has long been recognized for having the most comprehensive EV charging network globally, particularly in the United States. This extensive network has been a driving force behind other automakers deciding to adopt the NACS port. This transition aims to simplify charging logistics and increase the convenience for EV owners nationwide.
José Muñoz, President and Global COO of Hyundai Motor Company, as well as President and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, expressed the company’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. “We are expanding the IONIQ 5 lineup to include the off-road-capable XRT model alongside the NACS port and various other upgrades. Our high-performance IONIQ 5 N illustrates the thrilling potential of EVs and enhances our brand significantly,” Muñoz said.
