Tesla’s Expansion Efforts at Giga Berlin Face Another Delay
Tesla’s ambitious plans to expand its Giga Berlin factory are encountering new challenges. According to recent reports from German media, the approval process for part of this expansion will be delayed.
Initially, the Brandenburg State Office for the Environment was anticipated to approve the first phase of Giga Berlin’s expansion by fall 2024. However, emerging reports suggest that this timeline will not be met.
Tesla’s Giga Berlin plant manager, André Theirig, noted that the company originally aimed to secure approval between January and March of this year. A revised schedule was agreed upon in the fall. Some reports have pointed to Tesla’s recent job cuts—about 400 positions were trimmed in April—as a possible factor affecting the approval process.
Despite these setbacks, Tesla remains optimistic about moving forward with the expansion of Giga Berlin. A Tesla spokesperson stated, “We are confident that, despite current delays, the next expansion steps can be initiated as soon as possible in coordination with the state government and authorities.”
The planned expansion aims to double the factory’s production capacity from 500,000 to 1 million electric vehicles (EVs) annually. The approval process for Giga Berlin’s expansion has been segmented into several parts, enabling phased development.
The Brandenburg State Office for the Environment has already approved initial work related to the expansion within the existing facility boundaries. This preliminary approval allows Tesla to focus on creating a logistics area for new vehicles, constructing underground lines and staircases at the press shop, and installing rooftop solar panels. However, this approval does not yet extend to forest-clearing activities, which are required for further development stages.
In summary, while Tesla’s Giga Berlin expansion is facing delays, the company is determined to proceed, banking on ongoing coordination with state authorities to keep the project on track. For the latest updates and insights on Tesla’s progress, follow us on Twitter @automotivefyi.

Wow, another delay for Tesla? This is really frustrating! They should have had this all figured out by now. It’s not like it’s their first factory expansion.
Everyone calm down. This is totally normal in large-scale projects like these. Delays happen, and it’s clear Tesla is working closely with the authorities to make it happen. Patience is key, folks!
So typical… they always announce big plans, then can’t meet the deadlines. When will companies just be realistic about their timelines??
Isn’t it just ironic that they are cutting jobs while planning expansions? Doesn’t seem like the best way to keep things running smoothly.
Yeah, it’s kind of a contradiction, isn’t it? Maybe they just love keeping everyone on their toes!
Why do we even bother expanding at all if the delays are just gonna push everything back? Maybe they’re just trying to make Earth feel like Mars with all these extensions!
Haha, good one! Maybe Elon Musk is just trying to give us all a taste of his space travel timelines.
