FYI: Acura’s new homegrown EV concept slated for a 2025 release presents a sleek, high-tech vision of the brand’s electric future.
Introducing the Acura Performance EV Concept: A Homegrown Marvel
Sleek, smooth, and electric—these three words perfectly encapsulate Acura’s latest brainchild, the Acura Performance EV Concept. Making its grand debut at this year’s Monterey Car Week, this concept car offers a glimpse into Acura’s electric future. Unlike the current ZDX that utilizes the GM Ultium platform, the Performance EV Concept stands as a testament to Honda’s self-developed EV technology.
### A Homegrown Approach to EV Excellence
Setting itself apart from the ZDX—essentially a Chevrolet Blazer with Acura aesthetics—the Performance EV Concept is wholly developed in-house. Crafted by the Acura Design Studio in Los Angeles, this concept car adopts a more thoughtful and upscale design approach. It ditches the aggressive styling cues of Acura’s traditional models for sleek, elegant lines inspired by the “high-tech form and function of hydrofoil superyachts.”
### Design and Aesthetics
On the exterior, the Acura Performance EV Concept screams sophistication. Its body, finished in a semi-matte Moonlit White Pearl, radiates a ‘neue-luxe’ aesthetic. The vented hood and intense side surfacing contribute to its aggressive, yet refined look. The front fascia and rear design pay homage to the original NSX, featuring a full-width taillight bar and Acura script instead of a logo.
### Tech and Proportional Excellence
Though still a concept, the vehicle showcases futuristic proportions with 23-inch wheels wrapped in 295/35R23 tires. These proportions emphasize its design innovation, yet raise questions about interior space. Nevertheless, Acura states that these dimensions offer a preview of what’s to come in their future EV lineup.
### The Guts of the Machine
While Acura hasn’t released intricate details on the range, power, or battery technology, they have confirmed this will be the first model built using their proprietary EV technology. Production is set to commence at Honda’s revamped $4.4 billion EV hub in Ohio, expected to be operational by the end of 2024, with the car hitting the market in 2025.
### The Public Debut
The Acura Performance EV Concept will first be showcased publicly at The Quail on August 16, followed by an appearance on the Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance on August 18.
### Final Thoughts
The Acura Performance EV Concept represents a pivotal step in Acura’s journey toward a homegrown electric future. With its stunning design and advanced technology, it promises to be a trailblazer in the EV segment.
