FYI: Hyundai Motor Group is gearing up for a landmark year in EV sales, showcasing the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV4
Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) is marking an impressive year with substantial growth in electric vehicle (EV) sales. The automotive giant is gearing up to unveil two highly anticipated models: the three-row Hyundai Ioniq 9 and the compact Kia EV4. According to recent reports, the Ioniq 9 is set to debut this fall, potentially at the Los Angeles Auto Show, while the EV4 could make its appearance next spring.
Hyundai’s Continued EV Momentum
Despite the fluctuating EV market, HMG is forging ahead with its ambitious electrification plans. Recent insights from Korean publication Newsis reveal that the Hyundai Ioniq 9 will likely be showcased at the Los Angeles Auto Show, scheduled from November 22 to December 1. Following closely, the Kia EV4 is expected to launch next spring, adding to HMG’s impressive EV lineup.
Stellar Sales Performance
In the second quarter of this year, HMG clinched the title of the second best-selling electric car brand in the U.S., just behind Tesla. It boasted an extraordinary 74% year-over-year growth in EV sales, fueled by models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and the Kia EV6 and EV9—all based on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).
Introducing the Hyundai Ioniq 9
Originally, it was thought that Hyundai’s rival to the Kia EV9 would be named the Ioniq 7, following the reveal of the "Seven Concept" in 2021. However, the name was changed to Ioniq 9, possibly elevating it to flagship status and leaving room for future Ioniq 7 or 8 models. Using the same E-GMP platform, the Ioniq 9 is expected to offer three rows of seating and similar powertrain options as the EV9. Since testing began in March, the vehicle is now undergoing final quality inspections.
Kia EV4: An All-New Electric Sedan
Meanwhile, Kia is working on a high-riding four-door electric model. The EV4 concept, introduced last year, blends attributes from hatchbacks and sedans. Referred to as an "entirely new type of EV sedan," the EV4 is expected to be more angular and fastback-esque than its predecessor, the EV6. Positioned above the affordable EV3, it will feature comparable powertrain and battery options. The EV3 has already generated significant buzz in Korea, amassing over 10,000 reservations in just a month.
Expanding the Footprint
Hyundai aims to replicate the EV9’s success with the Ioniq 9. The model will be assembled at the under-construction "Meta Plant" near Atlanta, Georgia, which could help it qualify for federal tax credits.
