FYI: Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis are embracing Tesla’s charging standard to overcome EV charging challenges and expand market reach.
Hyundai Motor Group Accelerates EV Charging Revolution with Tesla’s NACS Integration
Hyundai Motor Group (HMG), comprising Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, is strategically positioning itself as a formidable competitor in the electric vehicle (EV) market by incorporating Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) across its new and refreshed EV models. This move aims to eliminate one of the significant barriers to EV adoption – limited charging infrastructure.
Hyundai Paces Ahead with Tesla’s Charging Port
In a robust bid to challenge Tesla’s dominance in the EV market, Hyundai Motor Group is set to equip five upcoming models with Tesla’s famous NACS port. Set to debut soon are the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5, 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9, 2025 Kia EV6, 2026 Kia EV9, and 2026 Genesis Electrified GV70. Moreover, the Ioniq 6 sedan is anticipated to join this lineup with the NACS feature. These models are expected to hit the roads in the coming months, indicating Hyundai’s swift alignment with the industry-wide shift toward the NACS.
The Need for Charging Accessibility
Recognizing the massive hurdle poor charging access poses to EV adoption, Hyundai and Kia have led the charge to integrate the superior Tesla network with HMG’s offerings. “Infrastructure accessibility is a major entry barrier,” stated Andre Ravinowich, senior manager of product planning at Hyundai. “The opportunity is clear, and action is needed swiftly.”
Supercharging Ahead with Accessible Chargers
Historically, Tesla Superchargers were exclusively for its vehicles. However, thanks to strategic collaborations, an increasing number of automakers are now integrating NACS ports into their cars, granting their users expansive access to Tesla’s formidable Supercharger network. Steve Center, Kia America’s COO and Executive Vice President, emphasizes that universal access to charging stations is pivotal for consumer adoption.
Hyundai is strategically pioneering this change, with timing on its side. The rollout of the Ioniq 9 and other refreshed models coincides seamlessly with this transition, allowing the brand to streamline its charging solutions with minimal disruption.
Industry Landscape and Competitor Responses
While Hyundai accelerates its efforts, other automakers like Ford and General Motors have lagged behind in rolling out NACS-integrated models. Models like the Mustang Mach-E and Cadillac’s forthcoming EVs are still reliant on the older charging system. However, EV startup Lucid Motors is making strides with its Gravity, set to launch with a NACS port later this year.
Hyundai’s Vision for the Future
The Hyundai Motor Group’s decisive actions position it as a future leader in NACS-equipped vehicles, potentially surpassing Tesla itself. Moving forward, all newly launched or updated Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles in the U.S. will feature the NACS charging port.
Hyundai’s bold stance is not merely a strategic shift; it’s a transformative move, ensuring their vehicles are at the forefront of EV technology and accessibility.
