When Dino documented a Weld Technique Scion FR-S back in 2014, many enthusiasts mistook it for a widespread Rocket Bunny kit. The mix-up is understandable considering Kei Miura’s Rocket Bunny overhaul of the ZN6 FR-S/GT86 (and ZC6 Subaru BRZ) was at the pinnacle of global tuning trends at the time. However, the Weld FR-S stands out with its intricate custom work devoid of any fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). This is just the starting point of this remarkable build.
### Special Features and True Craftsmanship
There are two primary approaches to automotive tuning. Some shops chase versatility, rapidly producing modified models ready for big exhibitions. Then, there are specialists like Jonny from Weld Techniques, who prioritize perfection over speed. Known for his uncompromising standards, Jonny’s work takes however long it needs, sometimes extending to years to craft one vehicle to its highest potential.
### The Long Haul: Over a Year of Dedication
The preparation for this particular FR-S spanned over a year. Despite numerous challenges, including an incomplete engine setup as late as the Tokyo Auto Salon in January, Jonny’s commitment to excellence meant the car arrived powered and ready. The effort behind the scenes was crucial, ensuring every detail from bodywork to the engine was flawless.
### Meticulous Metalwork and Unique Design
Unlike other builds featuring FRP fenders, the Weld Technique FR-S sports custom steel fenders shaped the old-school way: hand-hammered over a wireframe. The fender sections seamlessly integrate into the body with distinct dimple highlights pressed in around the lines for a remarkable finish. This metal artistry was a collaborative project with Nishino Body Repair in Ibaraki, where it spent six months getting shaped and refined.

Jonny’s vision wasn’t to create just another show car but to manifest the ultimate street FR-S that merges aesthetics, stance, comfort, and performance. The detailed bodywork includes custom steel fenders and a rear section reshaped to enhance the design dramatically. This overhaul wasn’t just about looks; it involved balancing the practical and performance aspects meticulously.
### Collaborations and Unique Parts
To fit the unique widened fenders, Jonny and Work Wheels designed bespoke 19″ Work XSA 04C rims. Complementing the wheels, the brakes were upgraded to Project μ monobloc calipers, featuring a distinctive Weld tribal motif and custom 380mm rotors for enhanced performance.
### Engine Craftsmanship
Not content with leaving the FA20 engine stock, Jonny opted against forced induction, preferring to enhance the naturally aspirated engine. Modifications started with a handcrafted aluminum intake manifold fitted with velocity stacks and a mechanical throttle body from a Toyota AE111 4A-GE. Further adjustments included custom fuel rails and injectors controlled by a Vi-Pec ECU, delivering about 210 horsepower with plans for more enhancements.
### Finishing Touches: Exterior and Interior Enhancements
The custom body color and fine metalwork are further enhanced with a Voltex carbon rear wing, utilizing a “swan neck” design to reduce turbulence and increase aerodynamic efficiency. Inside, only necessary upgrades were made, such as pairing Sparco seats with a suede-wrapped steering wheel to match the car’s bespoke feel.
