FYI: Discover how a trip to see an old friend transformed into a journey unveiling the benefits and realities of electric vehicle travel.
### EV Journeys and Walmart: A Surprising Partnership
Owning an electric vehicle often reshapes how you perceive typical roadside conveniences, and for me, it unexpectedly kindled a new appreciation for Walmart. As the largest American superstore brand, Walmart’s infrastructural growth in EV charging points has quietly yet significantly benefitted EV owners. Through its partnership with Electrify America, Walmart has strategically installed DC fast chargers in numerous parking lots across the country, offering solace to the weary EV driver and providing essential facilities, including restrooms.
During a round-trip journey from upstate New York to Richmond, Virginia, my 2024 Kia EV6 and I benefitted from two such Walmart charging stops. This journey not only put my car’s capabilities to the test but also highlighted the practical advantages of their charging network when traveling long distances across varied landscapes.
### The EV6: Performance and Lessons Learned
After acquiring my Kia EV6 Wind AWD in July, listed with a range of 282 miles but delivering up to 300 miles under favorable conditions, I’ve been impressed with its charging speed and road handling. However, its technological package, particularly software integration, leaves something to be desired. While future models might offer a Tesla-style charging port, my journey was an opportunity to truly understand the EV6’s road trip potential.
The expedition, taken just before winter’s chill set in, taught me invaluable lessons in EV travel. Here are insights worth considering for your own electric road trips:
#### Plan Your Route with Awareness
Despite the EV6’s range and fast-charging capabilities, it’s essential to plan routes with accurate understanding. The Northeast corridor is generally robust regarding fast-charging infrastructure, yet I miscalculated my journey through rural Pennsylvania. The sparse charging network in this area highlighted the importance of predefined route planning to avoid potential charging woes.
#### Route Planning Tools
Relying solely on the EV6’s navigation system, which suggested slower charging stations, led to unnecessary detours. An abrupt encounter with a suboptimal 30kW charger forced me to re-route to Harrisburg. Using tools like A Better Route Planner or Google Maps can provide more efficient paths and better charging station choices. On my return trip, these apps directed me to faster stations, significantly improving travel time.
#### Trust But Verify: Navigation Caution
Kia’s navigation system, though functional, lacks the optimization seen in models equipped with Google Maps or Tesla navigation. It’s advisable to verify your route through secondary apps for precise planning and better station allocation, ensuring efficient use of your EV’s capabilities.
#### Eco Mode: Travel Efficiency
Initially skeptical, I discovered Eco Mode enhanced the EV6’s efficiency by reducing power output and energy consumption from the front motor. This feature proved its worth during my journey, increasing my kWh efficiency and conserving additional charge, effectively alleviating range anxiety during highway stretches.
#### Travel Timeline and Costs
Considering optimal travel routes and charging strategy, the return trip to Richmond mirrored the time typically allocated for conventional trips, with minimal delays resulting from EV charging. Electrify America’s charging credits afforded significant cost savings, contrasting sharply with traditional fuel expenses.
### Conclusion
The journey underscored that while EV road trips necessitate thoughtful planning, the expanding infrastructure, such as Walmart’s charging network, continues to enhance the electric vehicle experience. For those exploring EV ownership, patience and planning will alleviate common travel hurdles. With continuous advancements in charging technologies, future trips promise to be more seamless, efficient, and enjoyable.
