2023 McLaren 750S: Elevating the Supercar Benchmark
It’s easy to mistake the sleek lines and aggressive stance of the 2023 McLaren 750S for its predecessor, the 720S. But this new model carries the torch forward in the supercar segment, as McLaren asserts that the 750S is the new benchmark. GTspirit eagerly awaits the opportunity to test drive this machine, but from what we know, if the 720S was a masterful package, the 750S is set to be an even greater marvel.
Michael Leiters, CEO of McLaren Automotive, puts it succinctly: “When you have a car recognized by so many drivers as a benchmark, to do something even better you have to examine every detail and really push hard for improvements that raise the bar again. This is what we have done with the new 750S and the lightweight, V8 engine performance, and outstanding dynamic abilities combine to deliver a supercar driving experience that hits new heights, with truly exhilarating levels of emotional connection.”
What’s New in the 750S?
Lightweight and Powerful Engineering
First and foremost, the McLaren 750S stands as the lightest and most powerful series-production McLaren to date. It boasts a segment-leading power-to-weight ratio of 579 horsepower-per-tonne (coupe, at the lightest dry weight), which outstrips even its closest competitor, the Ferrari 296 GTB, by 22 horsepower.
Weighing in at just 1,389kg (DIN), the 750S is 30kg lighter than the 720S, thanks to McLaren’s relentless commitment to lightweight engineering. Innovations such as carbon fiber racing seats, which are 17.5kg lighter than standard seats, new 10-spoke forged wheels saving 13.8kg, a lighter driver instrument display shedding 1.8kg, and even weight-saving windscreen glass, all contribute to this impressively reduced mass.
Explosive Performance
Retaining the 4.0-litre V8 configuration, the 750S amplifies its power output to 750PS and 800Nm of torque, thanks to increased boost pressure from ultra-low inertia twin-scroll turbochargers and an upgraded high-flow fuel pump.
The car can catapult from 0-200km/h (0-124mph) in just 7.2 seconds, making it faster than any other vehicle in its class. This rapid acceleration is supported by a transmission with a shorter final drive ratio and revised kickdown control strategy, providing enhanced in-gear acceleration.
Advanced Suspension Dynamics
The 750S introduces the latest iteration of McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control hydraulic suspension system, PCC III. This latest generation system features adjustments such as softer front springs, stiffer rear springs, and a reconfigured valve stack, balancing both passive and active elements.
Further fine-tuning includes adjustments to the accumulators in the struts, leading to superior ride comfort, roll control, steering feedback, and cornering balance. Overall, these enhancements expand the car’s dynamic capabilities while preserving the comfort levels of the 720S.
Improved Agility and Handling
McLaren’s commitment to handling prowess is evident in the 750S’s newly designed electro-hydraulic steering with a faster steering ratio and a new power-assistance pump. The front-end grip has been improved with a wider front track and refined suspension geometry. Together, these upgrades result in a more agile and responsive driving experience.
Aerodynamic and Aesthetic Enhancements
Visually, the 750S features a revamped rear end with a curving mesh cover and a longer rear wing inspired by the 765LT, which offers a 20% larger surface area yet weighs 1.6kg less due to its carbon fiber construction. The wing can deploy in various configurations, from increasing corner downforce to a DRS function for high-speed runs, and even popping up during high-speed braking to maximize stopping power.
At the front, the 750S boasts a new lower nose section with an extended splitter and narrower ‘eye socket’ intakes for a sharper appearance, available with additional carbon fiber elements.
Interior and Technology
Following in the footsteps of the Artura, the 750S integrates advanced technology and high-quality material switchgear in its driver-focused interior. New displays serve both informative and instrumental purposes, with the latter mounted on the steering column for optimal driver engagement. The MCL feature allows drivers to store and quickly access custom settings for aero, handling, powertrain, and transmission via the McLaren Speedmark button.
Track-Focused Options
For those intending to dominate the circuits, McLaren offers a track brake system with ceramic discs and monobloc calipers from the McLaren Senna, along with upgraded brake boosters and cooling technology. Super-Lightweight Carbon Fibre Racing Seats and track-focused Pirelli P ZERO Trofeo R tires are also available, enhancing the 750S’s track-ready capabilities.
Overall, the McLaren 750S takes the successful formula of the 720S and refines it into an even more potent supercar. While competitors like the Ferrari 296 are exploring hybrid technologies, McLaren continues to champion the visceral experience of a combustion engine, as evidenced by the 750S’s thrilling performance and dynamic handling. The supercar world awaits the 750S’s full reveal and the ensuing drive tests to solidify its new benchmark status.
