FYI: Kia is set to challenge the Tesla Model 3 with its new EV4, expected to hit markets in 2025.
Kia EV4 to Rival Tesla Model 3: A New Front in the EV Market
Kia is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of a series of models built on the Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP dedicated EV platform. Up next are smaller, more affordable front-wheel-drive cars, including the widely anticipated Kia EV3 crossover. Yet, all eyes are now on Kia’s forthcoming sedan, which aims to duke it out with the Tesla Model 3. Enter the Kia EV4.
Emergence of the Kia EV4
The Kia EV4, initially unveiled in concept form last year, is now being seen in rigorous testing phases. After several sightings in Korea, where it is set to be manufactured, AutoExpress has reported spotting the EV4 prototype undergoing pre-production trials in Germany.
Despite heavy camouflage, it’s evident that the vehicle is a new Kia model. Its proportions and details suggest it is indeed the EV4, staying true to the concept’s design study.
The Only Affordable Kia Electric Sedan
Kia plans to roll out several electric vehicles on the more economical 400-volt, front-wheel-drive version of its E-GMP platform, with all models except the EV4 being crossovers. The EV4 stands out as Kia’s only affordable electric sedan, making it a unique addition to their EV lineup.
Design and Expected Features
While the EV4 is labeled as a sedan, its side profile leans more towards a fastback design. It remains uncertain if the rear glass will lift with the tailgate open, reminiscent of the design quirk seen in the Tesla Model 3, which has a similar fastback profile but features a fixed glass trunk lid.
Kia describes the EV4 as “an entirely new type of EV sedan,” possibly alluding to its distinctive rear-end shape. Regardless of classification, the EV4 promises to be an eye-catching addition to the EV market, likely to attract significant attention.
Pricing and Performance
The EV4 is expected to be priced in the same range as the Tesla Model 3, with starting prices possibly dipping under $40,000. Additionally, a high-performance dual-motor EV4 GT is in the works, likely to serve as the spiritual successor to the acclaimed Kia Stinger. This suggests that driving enthusiasts can expect an enjoyable ride.
The EV4 is anticipated to share technology with the EV3, including:
- A base 58.3 kWh battery or an optional 81.4 kWh unit
- Front- or all-wheel-drive options
- 400-volt electrical architecture for cost efficiency
- At least 300 miles of range in its U.S. specification with the larger battery
- Advanced technical features not yet seen on other models
Global Presence and Production Plans
Although Kia has not yet confirmed all regions for the EV4’s release, its testing presence in Korea and Europe suggests it will be available in these markets by 2025. For a potential U.S. release, compliance with federal tax credits and avoiding import tariffs are vital, making local manufacturing a probable plan. Possible production sites include Kia’s revamped facility in West Point, Georgia, or a site in Mexico.
Conclusion
As Kia ventures further into the electric vehicle market, the EV4 stands as a promising competitor to the Tesla Model 3. With advanced features, a striking design, and a competitive price point, the EV4 is poised to capture the interest of EV enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike.
