FYI: Porsche’s Sonderwunsch personalization program now also caters to classic models, including a recent one-off project for a 993-generation Porsche 911 Speedster.
Customizing Classics: Porsche’s Sonderwunsch Program
Porsche recently highlighted the flexibility of its Sonderwunsch personalization program, emphasizing that it’s not limited to just new models. At the 2024 Monterey Car Week in California, the automaker showcased an impressive custom-built 993-generation Porsche 911 Speedster created for Luca Trazzi, an Italian industrial designer and avid collector of Porsche Speedsters.
A Dream Realized
The 993-generation Speedster had always been out of Trazzi’s reach, mainly because only two units were initially produced—one for comedian Jerry Seinfeld and the other for Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche, the original designer of the 911. These rare models were created under an earlier version of Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program.
The Factory One-Off Option
In recent years, Porsche has revitalized its personalization offerings with the new Factory One-Off option under the Sonderwunsch program, which caters to all road-going Porsches from any year. This highly exclusive service allows customers to bring their unique vision to life, provided it meets Porsche’s feasibility criteria.
The Design Process
For Trazzi’s 993 Speedster, Porsche started with a 1994 911 Cabriolet. Trazzi, being an industrial designer, came prepared with a clear vision and design sketches. The custom yellow paint named Otto Yellow, after Trazzi’s dog, is just one example of the personal touches that went into the car.
Key Design Features
- Bespoke Elements: Includes a raked windshield, lower roofline, double-bubble rear deck, and a suite of modern additions such as four-point daytime running lights from current 911s.
- Interior Upgrades: Features carbon-fiber accents on the dash and center console, along with redesigned switches for the power windows showcasing the 911 Speedster silhouette.
- Technology: Updated with an infotainment system supporting Apple CarPlay.
- Powertrain: The vehicle is powered by a 3.8-liter flat-6 engine from the 993-generation 911 Carrera RS, delivering approximately 300 hp.
Conclusion
Porsche’s latest project under the Factory One-Off option of the Sonderwunsch program is a testament to the company’s commitment to delivering unique, highly personalized vehicles. By reviving classic models and infusing them with modern technology and individual design touches, Porsche continues to make dreams come true for car enthusiasts like Luca Trazzi.
