Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson Takes Jabs at Tesla and Rivian: The EV Rivalry Heats Up
Lucid Motors’ CEO, Peter Rawlinson, is known for his sharp commentary on competitors in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Recently, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Rawlinson made headlines again with his bold remarks about Tesla and Rivian.
Lucid’s Competitive Edge
Rawlinson proudly discussed Lucid’s industry-leading range and competitive pricing. He detailed how the company aims to introduce EVs priced below $50,000 by leveraging its technology through licensing agreements with other automotive firms. Rawlinson referred to this technology as an "enabler," emphasizing its role in maintaining Lucid’s high-efficiency and superior range ratings.
Comparing with Tesla
Not missing an opportunity to compare Lucid directly with Tesla, Rawlinson highlighted the efficiency of Lucid’s battery packs. He cited their 88 kWh pack, which he claims delivers a greater range than any competitor:
“We achieved more range with an 88 kWh pack [reducing to 84 kWh for 2025], making it smaller, lighter, and more affordable than the competition. That’s how we can offer the Lucid Air Pure at a lower price point than Tesla.”
This statement is particularly noteworthy given the ongoing rivalry between Rawlinson and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk has previously disputed Rawlinson’s claim that he served as Chief Engineer of the Tesla Model S, suggesting that Rawlinson left during its early, challenging development stages.
The Rivian Challenge
Rawlinson also had some pointed remarks regarding Rivian, particularly about its forthcoming Gravity SUV. Rivian recently secured up to $5 billion in investment from Volkswagen to navigate economic challenges. Despite this partnership, Rawlinson remains unfazed:
“How is Rivian going to respond? The Gravity will be the best SUV on the market, unmatched by competitors. Product is king. I’ve driven the R1S and the Gravity—I’m not worried.”
Financial Outlook
Lucid is set to announce its second-quarter earnings on August 5, which will shed more light on its financial health and future strategies.
Final Thoughts
Peter Rawlinson’s commentary not only underscores Lucid’s advancements and ambitions but also powers an escalating rivalry in the EV market. His confidence in Lucid’s products and his willingness to challenge competitors publicly reinforce the company’s position as a formidable player in the industry.
