FYI: Lucid Motors has set its sights on challenging the Tesla Model Y, revealing new details about its upcoming midsize electric vehicle, pricing, and expected release date.
Lucid Motors Unveils Its Rival to Tesla Model Y with a Sneak Peek at Pricing and Launch Timeline
Lucid Motors has announced its intent to take on the Tesla Model Y, offering fresh insights into its forthcoming midsize electric vehicle (EV). While the Tesla Model Y currently holds a dominant position in the global automotive market, even achieving the status of the world’s best-selling car in 2023, Lucid aims to penetrate this competitive segment with its newer models.
The EV market, especially the crossover SUV category, sees fierce competition globally, particularly in the United States. Yet this hasn’t deterred Lucid from unveiling its plans to introduce a midsize vehicle that promises to compete head-to-head with the Model Y.
Details Emerge on Lucid’s New Midsize Vehicle
Lucid’s luxury sedan and future luxury SUV are already generating buzz, but the automaker is gearing up for another leap forward with its teased midsize vehicle. As part of a newly released teaser, Lucid revealed that its upcoming Gravity SUV will feature the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) inlet, eliminating the need for an adapter and streamlining the charging experience for users.
New Atlas Drive Unit
A significant addition to this new vehicle is Lucid’s Atlas drive unit. This compact and efficient drive unit is designed to optimize interior space and enhance the overall efficiency of the vehicle. The Atlas drive unit leverages a proprietary software stack that allows for advanced powertrain controls, including torque vectoring, traction control, and battery management, ultimately improving performance and cost-effectiveness. These enhancements are expected to contribute to more affordable vehicles in the future.
Multiple Models in Development
Lucid’s CEO and CTO, Peter Rawlinson, hinted at more than just one midsize vehicle being in the pipeline. In a conversation with Yahoo Finance, Rawlinson stated, “There’s not just one midsized vehicle, there’s a plural. I’ve not disclosed how many based upon the midsized platform, but I mean that is going to take on the Tesla Model 3, Model Y — best-selling car in the world — but it’s going to have Lucid advanced technology.”
Rawlinson believes that the new vehicles will excel in both range and cost-effectiveness compared to the Tesla Model Y, offering compelling alternatives for consumers in the EV market.
