FYI: Tesla faces a setback as nearly its entire Cybertruck production run is recalled due to adhesive issues.
A Bumpy Road for the "Bulletproof" Truck
Tesla’s futuristic Cybertruck, touted for its durability and bulletproof quality, is hitting a bump on the road due to a less robust adhesive problem. Nearly 46,096 Cybertrucks, produced between November 2023 and February 2024, must be recalled due to a flaw in their metal trim, which could endanger motorists with flying debris.
The Adhesive Issue Debacle
The problem centers on the cant rail, a decorative piece on the exterior made of steel connected with structural adhesive. Reports surged when parts of this metallic trim went airborne during travel. Although Tesla estimates that only 1% of these vehicles are potentially impacted, they’ve elected to inspect and fix each unit, responding proactively to customer concerns.
A Safety Concern Acknowledged
In collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla released a recall notice. The company admitted awareness of the adhesive defect back in January after receiving multiple customer complaints. The delamination of the cant rail not only risks dislodged panels but could also become a hazard for other drivers, increasing chances of incidents on roads.
Recalled Cybertruck: A Broader Picture
Different from past recalls where software updates patched issues over-the-air, this mechanical mishap requires a hands-on approach. Impacted owners will receive mail notices, urging them to schedule appointments with service centers for repairs. Furthermore, the fault has yet to be rectified in ongoing production, with expectations that March’s batch will be free from this trouble.
Repeat Recalls Highlight Ongoing Challenges
This isn’t the Cybertruck’s first body panel recall. Previously, in the summer of 2023, similar adhesive-related faults led to over 11,000 recalls. To date, the distinctive truck design has encountered a total of eight recalls since its initial rollout.
Looking Forward
While setbacks like these recall issues present challenges, they also underscore the importance of rigorous quality control in vehicle production. Continuous improvement is essential as Tesla aims to rectify these issues and enhance vehicle safety.
