Tesla is currently facing a peculiar and ongoing challenge at its Gigafactory in Berlin, Germany. The issue? An incessant and mysterious disappearance of company coffee mugs, which is going unnoticed by neither employees nor management.
Mystery of the Missing Mugs
During a recent intense staff meeting that predominantly revolved around unionization efforts, plant manager Andre Thierig expressed his exasperation. He disclosed that since the factory began operations, tens of thousands of coffee mugs have vanished. According to Deutsche Welle (DW), management has issued a stern warning: if the mug thefts continue, the company will cease providing essential break room cutlery such as forks and spoons.
Labor Relations and Controversy
A Rocky Road for Tesla’s European Workforce
The relationship between Tesla’s management and its European workforce has been fraught with issues. From allegations of unsafe working conditions to accusations of union-busting, Tesla has faced considerable scrutiny. In Sweden, some Tesla employees went on strike in October 2023 due to similar concerns. Meanwhile, the Gigafactory Berlin has drawn public attention from both employees and environmentalists due to its numerous operational challenges.
Andre Thierig didn’t mince words at the meeting, stating, “We’ve bought 65,000 coffee mugs since we started production here. 65,000! Statistically speaking, each of you already has five Ikea coffee cups at home.” Gigafactory Berlin, which officially opened on March 22, 2022, has been operational for 840 days. This puts the daily disappearance rate at roughly 77 mugs—an alarming statistic when considering the plant has only 12,000 employees.
Thierig vehemently added, “I’m really tired of approving orders to buy more coffee cups.” He also reiterated the threat that non-compliance would lead to the removal of forks and spoons from the break room.
Further Complications and Environmental Concerns
Aside from the issue of missing coffee mugs, Tesla has faced multiple labor and safety problems at its Berlin factory. As reported by Reuters, the Gigafactory has three times the number of safety incidents compared to a nearby Audi plant. The recent global layoffs, which saw more than 10% of Tesla’s staff being let go, have further strained the relationship with its workforce.
Moreover, environmental activists have heavily criticized the company, some even resorting to radical measures such as setting fire to utility poles near the plant to disrupt operations.
IG Metall’s Unionization Efforts
Local union IG Metall has been actively trying to unionize the factory employees. Despite not securing a majority vote recently, IG Metall secretary Jannes Bojert has indicated that a strike remains on the table if working conditions do not see substantial improvements, although it is considered a last resort.
A History of Mug Drama
This isn’t the first time Tesla has faced drama involving mugs. Back in 2017, Elon Musk shared an image of his favorite mug featuring a whimsical, farting unicorn, which led to accusations of intellectual property theft when the company allegedly used a similar image on holiday cards and to promote an in-car sketchpad app without the artist’s permission.
With numerous issues plaguing the Gigafactory Berlin, from union disputes and safety concerns to environmental protests, the case of the vanishing coffee mugs appears to be just another layer of complexity in Tesla’s European operations.
