FYI: The Workpac Racing team from Malacca, Malaysia, is setting their sights on breaking the eight-second barrier in the quarter-mile with their meticulously prepared Mitsubishi Lancer GSR Evolution III.
Run Fast, Run Cool: The Spectacular Journey of Workpac Racing’s Evo III
When it comes to blending style with speed, Hadri Hamzah of Workpac Racing has set a new standard. Operating out of Malacca, Malaysia, the team has elevated their Mitsubishi Lancer GSR Evolution III to become an international drag racing sensation.
The Quest for Speed
Meeting Hadri Hamzah at Retro Havoc this year offered a glimpse into the passion and dedication driving this project. Hamzah’s first and foremost goal is to successfully clock an eight-second run in the quarter mile. Given that the Lancer’s current best ET on slicks is standing at an impressive 9.07 seconds, this marks a highly achievable target for the upcoming drag race in Thailand.
Aesthetic Aspirations
While speed is paramount, Hadri’s vision for the Evo extends beyond the track. Maintaining the show car’s aesthetic appeal is equally important. Step inside the Evo III, and you’ll encounter a perfect balance between performance and presentation. Featuring a full Undersix roll cage and carkey seats, the vehicle is not just race-ready but also immaculately clean, a testament to Workpac’s primary business in automotive detailing.
Under the Hood Marvels
The heart of this beast remains the iconic 4G63 engine, but with significant modifications from its original Mitsubishi factory setup. Key enhancements include Wiseco forged pistons, R&R forged connecting rods, an HKS cam, and a JM Fabrications intake manifold. The centerpiece of this powerful setup is a massive Precision turbo, mounted to a custom tubular exhaust manifold that ensures optimal airflow.
Attention to Detail
One look at the car’s body and it’s clear that Workpac Racing has spared no effort in maintaining its pristine condition. Apart from a custom Tuan Carbon Fiber wing, the original Evo III kit remains largely unchanged. Astonishingly, even the acrylic windows remain free from scratches—a rarity for a vehicle so heavily raced.
Powerhouse Performance
Running on leaded VP Racing Q16 drag race fuel, this Evo churns out over 1,100 horsepower. Pairing this immense power with a PPG dog box transmission, Quarter Master twin-plate clutch, and upgraded driveshaft ensures a seamless transfer to the 15-inch RAYS Volk Racing TE37 wheels wrapped in Hoosier slicks. For deceleration, the setup includes a reliable Simpson parachute.
Future Potential
The Malaysian drag racing scene is still budding, yet cars like the Workpac Racing Evo III highlight the immense potential the country offers on an international scale. Even with its current formidable specs, there’s room for more power, possibly via nitrous oxide injection or further weight reduction from its current 1,204 kg (2,654 lb) chassis.
Final Thoughts
The Workpac Racing Evo III encapsulates the spirit of motorsport—a harmonious blend of performance, style, and meticulous craftsmanship. As the team continues to push boundaries, their story is a thrilling chapter in Malaysia’s emerging drag racing narrative.
