FYI: The Rudy Klein "Junkyard" Collection, which includes many rare cars, is finally being auctioned by RM Sotheby’s more than two decades after his death.
Classic Car "Junkyard" Collection Set for Auction After Decades
A remarkable collection of classic cars that has languished beneath the Californian sun for decades is finally heading to auction this October. The eclectic assembly, accumulated by the late Rudi Klein—a German immigrant and scrap yard entrepreneur—boasts some of the rarest and most coveted vehicles in automotive history.
Rudi Klein: The Man Behind the Collection
Rudi Klein began his journey in South Central Los Angeles in 1967 when he established a thriving scrap yard business. A true car enthusiast with a keen eye for exceptional automobiles, Klein’s unique approach saw him collecting broken down and wrecked cars, often rare or hard-to-find models, especially those hailing from his native Germany. Rudi Klein passed away in 2001, leaving behind a trove of automotive treasures that have since been untouched, until now.
Anticipated Auction by RM Sotheby’s
Now, more than twenty years after his death, Klein’s collection has been entrusted to RM Sotheby’s auction house, slated to be sold late in October. While the cars have gathered dust and rust over the years, their allure remains unscathed.
Highlight Models in the Collection
Among the standout vehicles in the collection are:
- Lamborghini Miura: Iconic for its revolutionary design and racy performance.
- Mercedes-Benz 300 SL: Including an ultra-rare Alloy Gullwing model, one of only 29 ever made, renowned for its lightweight body optimized for racing. This particular model is notable as the only one delivered in black, previously owned by Luigi Chinetti, the famous Ferrari importer. A 300 SL in mint condition fetched around $7 million at auction just last year.
- 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500K: A one-of-a-kind coupe, previously owned by pre-war Grand Prix legend, Rudolf Caracciola. This vehicle, believed to be Klein’s favorite, is tipped to be the most expensive item in the collection.
Other Noteworthy Vehicles
Additional prized possessions include:
- 1939 Horch 855 Special Roadster: Allegedly owned by Eva Braun.
- 1967 Iso Grifo A3/L Spyder Prototype by Bertone.
- Multiple Porsche 356s.
Restoration Needs and Future Prospects
Many vehicles within the collection will require extensive restoration to return to roadworthy condition, given their prolonged exposure to the elements and years of neglect. However, the historical significance, rarity, and intrinsic value of these models make them an irresistible prospect for collectors and car enthusiasts alike.
Details regarding the full list of vehicles, as well as the exact date and location of the auction, are expected to be announced soon.
