FYI: The electric truck market is broadening its horizons with new models from notable brands, as anticipation grows for upcoming launches.
Expanding Electric Truck Market: The Latest Entrant – GMC Sierra EV
Buyer options for electric trucks are expanding rapidly, although the market is still relatively compact. Since Rivian’s trailblazing debut with the R1T, every major automaker has thrown their hat into the ring. Ford, Tesla, Chevrolet, and GMC quickly followed suit, introducing the F-150 Lightning, Cybertruck, Silverado EV, and Hummer EV, respectively. As we await the Ram 1500’s foray into this burgeoning sector, GMC is already making waves with the Sierra EV.
After unveiling the Sierra EV in late 2022, GMC began accepting orders for its first edition in the spring of 2024. According to GM Authority, reservation holders should be teeming with excitement as the much-anticipated Edition 1 batch is set to hit dealerships across the United States within weeks.
Inventory and Availability
Despite the fervor, inventory appears limited at the moment. As of mid-August, only nine Sierra EVs in transit were listed nationwide on Cars.com. Any trucks that have arrived at dealerships are likely already claimed by reservation holders or allocated as demonstration units.
As with other electric vehicle launches by General Motors, the initial production run for this 2024 model year will be constrained to the Denali Edition 1 trim. Priced at $99,495, the launch MSRP is $9,200 less than its originally announced price in 2022. Moreover, improvements in vehicle specifications are notable, offering 10% more range, an additional 500 lbs towing capacity, and an increased payload of 150 lbs.
2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 Specifications
- Electric Range: 440 miles
- Maximum Towing Capacity: 10,000 lbs
- Maximum Payload: 1,450 lbs
- Horsepower: 754 hp
- Torque: 785 lb-ft
- 0-60 Time: 4.5 seconds

Anticipating Future Models
If you’re hesitant about the $100,000 price tag and willing to wait, the 2025 model year brings more options. GMC plans to roll out the Elevation and AT4 trims, which will be more budget-friendly. Buyers will also have a choice between two battery capacities, projected at 170 kWh and 200 kWh.
So, if you have $100,000 to invest in a top-tier electric truck, the GMC Sierra EV is yet another compelling option. However, the broader excitement will unfold when base and mid-level trims for these electric trucks become available.
