FYI: Revel has made its debut in California’s EV charging scene with the launch of a new hub in San Francisco. The startup is set to expand its footprint with additional stations in the Bay Area and New York.
Revel’s Expansion into California
Brooklyn-based startup Revel has ventured into the bustling electric vehicle terrain of California, unveiling its first EV charging hub in the iconic Mission district of San Francisco. Marking its West Coast debut, this strategic initiative underscores Revel’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle infrastructure within high-density urban areas.
State-of-the-Art Charging Hub
The San Francisco hub features 12 cutting-edge chargers, each capable of delivering an impressive 320 kilowatts of power. This ensures fast and efficient charging for EV owners. The facility includes a balanced mix of Tesla-style plugs and the universally compatible Combined Charging System (CCS), catering to both Tesla models and other electric vehicles on the road.
Revel’s Vision for Urban Charging
Paul Suhey, Revel’s cofounder and COO, emphasized the company’s goal to build reliable urban fast-charging facilities that cater to all EV drivers. At the ribbon-cutting event, he highlighted the necessity of such infrastructure for the continued growth and adoption of electric vehicles. "Without access to efficient fast-charging options, the momentum of EV adoption could be stunted," he noted.
Unique Approach to Charging Infrastructure
In the competitive landscape of EV charging, Revel aims to differentiate itself by establishing substantial charging hubs in urban locales. Unlike smaller, understated setups, Revel’s focus is on creating larger stations to ensure that EV drivers have readily available access to chargers. The company’s philosophy is rooted in providing seamless and rapid charging experiences, eliminating concerns over availability and efficiency.
Ambitious Expansion Plans
Revel isn’t stopping at just one hub. Within the next year, the startup plans to introduce seven more stations in the San Francisco Bay Area, adding a total of 125 new charging plugs. This expansion includes two additional locations in San Francisco, two in Oakland, a pair near San Francisco International Airport, and another in downtown San Jose.
The company also has significant expansion plans back home in New York, including a massive 60-stall hub planned for Queens, aiming to operate 300 chargers in the city by 2025. Revel’s New York operations also extend to an electric rideshare service, although this aspect will not be introduced in California.
A Growing Demand for EVs
San Francisco’s progressive embrace of electric vehicles is evident, with Mayor Daniel Lurie announcing that electric cars account for a third of the city’s recent vehicle sales. Revel’s expansion in this market is positioned to support this burgeoning demand and drive further electrification in the region.
