Rising delivery delays for the Tesla Model 3 in China suggest a surge in demand for the popular electric vehicle.
All three Model 3 configurations have seen their delivery schedules pushed to three to five weeks, up from the previous two to four weeks. This extension in wait times was first reported by CnEVPost.
The latest adjustment in estimated delivery times occurred on July 11, transitioning from an earlier one to four weeks to the newer two to four weeks, impacting all Model 3 configurations alike.
This change appears to stem from increased interest in the Model 3, particularly since reports have surfaced that Giga Shanghai—a key Tesla production facility—recently ramped up to “full operation,” according to Chinese media that toured the plant.
Despite the Model 3 not making it into China’s top 10 best-selling new-energy vehicles (NEVs) for the first half of 2024, where the Model Y was the top seller, demand for the Model 3 shows signs of rebounding. Recent enhancements to the Model 3—like upgraded suspension, a redesigned front fascia, and interior refinements—could be driving renewed interest.
Tesla Model Y leads first-half EV sales statistics in China
While Tesla has seen steady sales in China this year, they are still not matching the figures from the previous year. June sales reached 59,261 EVs—a drop of over 20% compared to June 2023’s 74,212 units—though it marked an improvement from May’s 55,215 units.
In June, Tesla sold 18,151 Model 3 units out of the total 59,261 vehicles, indicating that the majority of sales continue to be dominated by the Model Y. The Model S and Model X models contributed minimally to the overall sales.
The Model Y remains Tesla’s primary revenue driver, despite facing a decline in year-over-year sales in China. The increasing competition from local manufacturers continues to challenge Tesla’s dominance, offering lower-cost and accessible alternatives.
Nonetheless, the Model 3’s recent design and performance updates might be contributing to its growing appeal, as indicated by the extended delivery times.
