FYI: Rivian Keeps Gear Shifters While Rivals Go Digital
Not to worry, Rivian fans. Your gear shifters are safe.
Rivian’s founder and CEO, RJ Scaringe, confirmed on MotorTrend’s “The InEVitable” podcast that the innovative startup will not follow Tesla’s lead in eliminating traditional gear-shifter stalks from its vehicles. This decision comes after much internal debate.
Rivian’s Stance on Physical Controls
“You can imagine, we’ve had all those debates,” Scaringe said regarding the removal of physical controls in favor of touchscreen functionalities. “On the PRNDL side, yes you could save some costs, but we don’t see it as a customer benefit.”
As the automotive industry increasingly leans towards digital interfaces to lower costs and streamline vehicle interiors, Rivian is holding its ground. Although Rivian’s upcoming R2 and R3 SUVs will introduce various changes, the gear shifter will remain a tangible part of the driving experience.
Industry Trends and Rivian’s Response
Many car manufacturers are progressively removing physical controls to favor touchscreens, a move that saves money and creates a sleeker car interior. However, Scaringe believes the trend doesn’t always serve the customer. "We believe there’s a point where simplifying can start to compromise usability," he asserted.
Tesla’s Different Approach
Contrary to Rivian, Tesla has already eliminated gear-shifter stalks in models like the Model 3, Model X, Model S, and Cybertruck. Instead, these vehicles allow drivers to shift gears using swipe gestures on the left section of the touchscreen. Additionally, Tesla’s "Auto Shift out of Park" feature, currently in beta, can automate gear selection. To counter potential touchscreen failures, backup PRND buttons are strategically placed either above the rear-view mirror or near the cupholders.
Balancing Physical and Digital
Rivian has made some controversial decisions as well, such as the disappearance of physical heating and air conditioning controls. This move aims to save costs, improve interior aesthetics, and offer long-term advantages. Scaringe cited the recent addition of vent-position presets as an example, which allows for easier adjustments through the touchscreen.
“As far as removing physical controls goes, we think we’ve reached the right balance,” Scaringe noted.
Summary
In embracing a balanced approach to user interfaces, Rivian prioritizes customer experience over cost-saving through extreme digital functionality. While Tesla pushes boundaries with almost fully digital control systems, Rivian maintains a blend of tangible and digital mechanisms to ensure usability and satisfaction. This tailored approach keeps Rivian vehicles intuitive and user-friendly while still integrating modern digital solutions where they make sense.
